Sarkhan, Dragon Ascendant

Mana value2EDHREC#7,804

The Commander

When Sarkhan enters, you may behold a Dragon. If you do, create a Treasure token. (To behold a Dragon, choose a Dragon you control or reveal a Dragon card from your hand.)

Whenever a Dragon you control enters, put a +1/+1 counter on Sarkhan. Until end of turn, Sarkhan becomes a Dragon in addition to its other types and gains flying.

Guide

Gameplan

Sarkhan is a cheap mono-red Dragon-tribal payoff that turns your fatties into a snowballing threat. Ramp aggressively with Treasures and rituals to cheat out Dragons ahead of curve, growing Sarkhan into an evasive beater while flooding the board with fliers, then close with a wide aerial assault or a big burn finish.

Strengths

  • Only 2 mana, so it comes down early and generates a Treasure to accelerate your first Dragon
  • Snowballs hard—every Dragon grows Sarkhan and gives it flying for evasive commander damage
  • Mono-red Dragons have deep, powerful tribal support (Dragonlords, Hellkites, anthem effects)
  • Treasure ramp helps mono-red overcome its mana and card-advantage limits

Weaknesses

  • Mono-red lacks reliable card draw and struggles to recover from board wipes
  • Heavily reliant on resolving high-cost Dragons; can stumble if ramp is disrupted
  • No built-in protection—Sarkhan dies easily to spot removal before it grows
  • Top-heavy curves are vulnerable to fast combo and stax decks

Key Cards

  • Dragon TempestGives all your Dragons haste and deals burn equal to their power whenever one enters, turning your fliers into immediate damage.
  • Scourge of ValkasPings every opponent for big damage on each Dragon ETB, providing a reach-free win condition.
  • Utvara HellkiteSpawns a 6/6 Dragon every time a Dragon attacks, exploding the board and Sarkhan's counters.
  • Sarkhan's TriumphTutors any Dragon to hand, smoothing your top-heavy curve and enabling combos.
  • Goldspan DragonDoubles Treasure value and adds bodies, supercharging your ramp and snowball.
  • Terror of the PeaksBurns opponents for each creature's power as Dragons enter, mirroring Scourge for redundancy.

Upgrade Path

Tighten the curve and add fast mana like Mana Vault, Jeska's Will, and Treasure-makers to deploy Dragons turns ahead of schedule. Lean into the burn ETB package (Scourge of Valkas, Terror of the Peaks, Dragon Tempest) with cost reducers like Dragonspeaker Shaman and Urza's Incubator so you can chain multiple Dragons in a turn. Round out with recursion and card advantage—Faithless Looting, Wheel of Misfortune, and a few cheat-into-play effects like Sneak Attack or Quicksilver Amulet—to mitigate mono-red's weaknesses.
