Sovereign Okinec Ahau
The Commander
Ward
Whenever Sovereign Okinec Ahau attacks, for each creature you control with power greater than that creature's base power, put a number of +1/+1 counters on that creature equal to the difference.
Guide
Gameplan
Sovereign Okinec Ahau turns temporary power boosts into permanent +1/+1 counters: pump your creatures above their base power (anthems, auras, equipment, combat tricks), then attack to lock in that difference as counters across your whole board. The deck snowballs into a wide, hyper-buffed army that closes games through combat damage, often very quickly thanks to compounding counters.
Strengths
- Converts cheap, repeatable buffs into permanent stat growth on every eligible creature at once
- Goes wide and tall simultaneously, enabling explosive trample/anthem alpha strikes
- Ward 2 protects your key engine from spot removal
- GW has premier ramp, go-wide tokens, and +1/+1 counter support
- Repeatable each combat, so the board snowballs out of control if unanswered
Weaknesses
- Effect only triggers on attack, so it's slow and exposed to board wipes before payoff
- Needs a developed board first; weak in a topdeck war or after a sweeper
- No native evasion, card advantage, or interaction in the command zone
- Color identity lacks reliable counterspells and instant-speed removal
- Relies on temporary pumps being active during the attack trigger to generate counters
Key Cards
- Glorious Anthem — A cheap repeatable +1/+1 to all creatures that gets converted into permanent counters every attack.
- Intangible Virtue — Boosts your token army's power so each attack banks counters across dozens of bodies.
- Cathars' Crusade — Stacks even more counters as creatures enter, accelerating the snowball alongside Okinec's trigger.
- Craterhoof Behemoth — Its enormous temporary power buff to your team converts into a board full of permanent counters and ends games.
- Branching Evolution — Doubles every counter Okinec places, massively amplifying the engine.
- Skullclamp — Provides the card advantage GW counters decks badly need to refuel after sweepers.
Upgrade Path
Add counter doublers (Branching Evolution, Hardened Scales, Doubling Season) and proliferate to multiply Okinec's output, plus anthems that are cheap and recurring. Prioritize protection and resilience—Heroic Intervention, Teferi's Protection, and Skullclamp for card draw—so a single wrath doesn't end the game. Tighten the curve with fast ramp (Sol Ring, Three Visits, Nature's Lore) and finish with reliable overrun effects to convert your stat advantage into immediate lethal.

Win Conditions
- ▸Alpha strike with an overrun effect like Craterhoof Behemoth or Overwhelming Stampede
- ▸Grinding combat damage as the whole team gains permanent counters each attack
- ▸Trample and evasion (Rancor, Pathway Arrows) pushing through a counter-buffed board
- ▸Token swarm under stacked anthems becoming unblockable damage
Archetypes
- +1/+1 Counters — Okinec generates permanent counters on attack, and doublers plus proliferate maximize the payoff.
- Tokens / Go-Wide — Anthems pump a token swarm above base power, banking counters on every creature at once.
- Voltron-lite Aggro — Equipment and auras push power high, converting buffs into a permanently dominant attacker each turn.
- Stompy Midrange — GW ramp into big creatures and overrun effects leverages the snowballing counter growth for lethal swings.
