Ghalta and Mavren
The Commander
Trample
Whenever you attack, choose one —
• Create a tapped and attacking X/X green Dinosaur creature token with trample, where X is the greatest power among other attacking creatures.
• Create X 1/1 white Vampire creature tokens with lifelink, where X is the number of other attacking creatures.
Guide
Gameplan
Ghalta and Mavren is a go-wide/go-tall hybrid aggro commander: attack each turn and pick the mode that punishes the board. With big creatures out you spawn a huge Dinosaur copying your largest attacker's power; with a wide board you flood the field with lifelinking Vampires. Both modes snowball your attacks turn over turn, letting you swing for lethal commander damage or overwhelm with tokens.
Strengths
- Generates value on every attack regardless of which mode you choose, snowballing fast
- Both go-wide tokens and go-tall fatties are supported, giving flexible deckbuilding
- Lifelink Vampires offset aggro-deck life loss and stabilize against other attackers
- GW has elite token, anthem, and ramp support to abuse the triggers
- Trample on the commander pushes damage through chump blockers
Weaknesses
- Triggers only fire when you attack, so removal of the commander or being held back stalls the engine
- Vulnerable to board wipes that erase your token investment in one card
- No built-in card advantage or interaction outside what you draft into
- GW lacks reach and ramp into removal, struggling against combo and control
- Seven mana commander means a slow start if it gets repeatedly killed
Key Cards
- Craterhoof Behemoth — Turns a wide Vampire/Dino board into instant lethal and copies enormous power for the Dino mode.
- Cathars' Crusade — Every token created from attacks stacks +1/+1 counters, growing your whole army explosively.
- Anointed Procession — Doubles the Vampire tokens generated each attack for a snowballing army.
- Ghalta, Primal Hunger — A second giant body makes the Dino-copy mode produce absurdly large tokens.
- Skullclamp — Converts excess 1/1 Vampires into a steady stream of cards, fixing the deck's card advantage problem.
- Smothering Tithe — Provides the ramp and treasure flood GW needs to deploy threats and recover from wipes.
- Heroic Intervention — Protects your board from wraths and your commander from targeted removal at instant speed.
Upgrade Path
Add token doublers (Anointed Procession, Parallel Lives) and counter engines (Cathars' Crusade) to multiply value per attack, plus payoffs like Craterhoof Behemoth and Pathbreaker Ibex to convert the board into lethal. Improve consistency with mana ramp (Smothering Tithe, Sol Ring, Three Visits) and card advantage (Skullclamp, Esper Sentinel, Beast Whisperer). Round it out with protection like Heroic Intervention and Teferi's Protection to survive the inevitable board wipes.

Win Conditions
- ▸Overrun effects like Craterhoof Behemoth turning a wide board into one lethal alpha strike
- ▸Commander damage and trample from giant Dinosaur tokens plus the Ghalta body
- ▸Going wide with anthem-pumped Vampires and grinding opponents down over multiple turns
- ▸Lifelink swings outpacing opponents while tokens close the game
Archetypes
- Tokens — The Vampire mode floods the board and pairs with anthems and doublers to go wide.
- Stompy/Big Creatures — The Dinosaur mode rewards high-power attackers, enabling a fatties-and-trample plan.
- Aristocrats-lite — A constant stream of expendable tokens fuels sacrifice payoffs and drains.
- Lifegain Midrange — Lifelink Vampires turn combat into life swings that support lifegain payoffs.
