Spider-Woman, Stunning Savior
The Commander
Flying
Venom Blast — Artifacts and creatures your opponents control enter tapped.
Guide
Gameplan
Spider-Woman lands turn 2 and immediately taxes your opponents' development by forcing all their artifacts and creatures into play tapped, neutralizing blockers and disrupting ramp/mana rocks. From there you play a tempo-stax game—stacking lock pieces and attacking through opponents who can never present untapped defenses—while building toward a wide or evasive board that closes the game.
Strengths
- A free, repeatable soft-lock effect on a 2-mana evasive body that comes down early
- Enables aggressive alpha strikes since opponents' creatures can't block the turn they're cast
- Pairs incredibly well with non-untap stax (Winter Orb, Static Orb, Stasis) to fully lock boards
- Cheap commander leaves tons of mana for protection and disruption
- UW gives access to the best counterspells, wraths, and pillow-fort tools
Weaknesses
- The effect only stops creatures/artifacts cast after she resolves—it doesn't reset existing boards
- Doesn't slow flash creatures from blocking or enchantment/planeswalker-based threats
- Removal-light table can quickly answer a 2-mana commander and the tax disappears
- Limited reach and ramp typical of UW means slow closes if the aggro plan stalls
- Vigilance and untap effects on opponents' permanents blunt the lock
Key Cards
- Authority of the Consuls — Stacks the tapped-on-entry lock and adds lifegain plus scry, doubling down on the tempo plan.
- Blind Obedience — Tapped-on-entry redundancy with extort, punishing opponents who try to rebuild.
- Winter Orb — Opponents enter tapped and can barely untap, creating a near-total stax lock while you build a board.
- Static Orb — With Spider-Woman, opposing creatures and artifacts hit play tapped and stay that way, hard-locking defenses.
- Stasis — Turns the tapped-entry effect into a soft prison where opponents' boards never come online.
- Smothering Tithe — Generates massive mana to fuel protection, counters, and the next threat in an attrition shell.
- Swords to Plowshares — Premier cheap removal to clear the one blocker or threat that slips past the tax.
- Brave the Sands — Vigilance lets your attackers stay back as the only untapped blockers on the board.
Upgrade Path
Lean fully into the lock by adding non-untap stax (Winter Orb, Static Orb, Stasis, Smokestack) and ramp that ignores it (Smothering Tithe, fast mana rocks) so you stay ahead of the prison. Tighten the curve with cheap interaction (Swords to Plowshares, Mana Drain, Cyclonic Rift) to protect Spider-Woman and reset problem boards. Round out with efficient evasive threats or a token/anthem package so you can actually close once the table is locked down.

Win Conditions
- ▸Beating down with flyers and a go-wide token board while opponents can't block
- ▸Locking the table with non-untap stax (Static Orb/Stasis) and winning at leisure
- ▸Voltron damage on Spider-Woman herself through equipment and auras
- ▸Grinding incremental damage from extort/lifedrain pieces like Blind Obedience and Authority of the Consuls
Archetypes
- Stax — Tapped-on-entry plus non-untap effects like Winter Orb and Stasis create a one-sided prison.
- Tempo/Aggro — Opponents can never block on the turn they develop, letting an evasive board push relentless damage.
- Pillow Fort/Control — UW counters, wraths, and taxing enchantments protect the lock while you grind out wins.
- Voltron — A cheap flying commander can be suited up to swing through perpetually tapped defenders.
