Sun Quan, Lord of Wu
The Commander
Creatures you control have horsemanship. (They can't be blocked except by creatures with horsemanship.)
Guide
Gameplan
Sun Quan turns your whole board into a virtually unblockable army, since almost no Commander card has horsemanship. Flood the board with cheap creatures (often a tribe like Soldiers, Merfolk, or Faeries), suit them up with anthems and equipment, and swing for lethal commander damage or wide aggro. The deck plays a beatdown game backed by mono-blue's protection, card draw, and counterspells.
Strengths
- Effectively unblockable attackers every turn — horsemanship dodges nearly all blockers in the format
- Mono-blue gives access to the best card advantage, counters, and protective spells
- Pairs perfectly with anthems, equipment, and pump to convert evasion into fast kills
- Strong commander-damage clock when buffed; can also go wide for a single alpha strike
Weaknesses
- Slow commander at 6 mana that does nothing the turn it lands without a board
- Removal-magnet — killing Sun Quan removes your whole evasion plan
- Vulnerable to board wipes since the strategy is creature-density dependent
- Mono-blue struggles with non-targeted artifact/enchantment removal and lacks direct creature removal
- Flying/reach is irrelevant — fogs, damage prevention, and lifegain can stall the aggro plan
Key Cards
- Coastal Piracy — Turns your unblockable attackers into a card-draw engine that refills your hand each combat.
- Bident of Thassa — Draws a card for each attacking creature and forces opponents' creatures to attack, clearing potential blockers.
- Stoneforge Mystic — Tutors and cheats out equipment to make individual horsemen into lethal threats.
- Lightning Greaves — Protects Sun Quan from removal so your evasion engine stays online.
- Cyclonic Rift — Mono-blue's premier finisher — overload clears blockers and stax pieces before an alpha strike.
- Empress Galina — Lets you steal opposing legendary creatures and commanders while keeping pressure up.
Upgrade Path
Lean into either pure aggro consistency or a Voltron focus — add cheap evasive enablers, top-tier equipment (Sword of Feast and Famine, Embercleave-style buffs unavailable, so Hatred-adjacent blue pump like Tetzimoc isn't an option; use Rogue's Passage redundancy instead). Improve protection density with Lightning Greaves, Swiftfoot Boots, Heroic Intervention substitutes (blue's Teferi's Protection via white isn't legal, so rely on counterspells), and add fast mana like Sol Ring and Mana Crypt to deploy Sun Quan earlier. Tighten the curve with one- and two-drop unblockable beaters and anthems (Coat of Arms, Door of Destinies if tribal) to threaten faster lethal.

Win Conditions
- ▸Alpha strike with a wide board of unblockable creatures
- ▸Voltron commander damage via equipment and pump on one horseman
- ▸Curving out aggro then closing with Cyclonic Rift overload to remove all blockers
- ▸Combat-damage triggers (Coastal Piracy/Bident) to draw into more threats and overwhelm
Archetypes
- Aggro / Beatdown — Universal horsemanship makes any creature an unblockable attacker for relentless damage.
- Voltron — Stacking equipment and auras on a single unblockable creature delivers fast commander or combat damage.
- Tribal — Slot Sun Quan into a Merfolk, Faerie, or Soldier shell to make a synergistic tribe unblockable.
- Spellslinger Tempo — Mono-blue counters and bounce protect the board while evasive creatures grind out wins.
