The Jolly Balloon Man
The Commander
Haste
,
: Create a token that's a copy of another target creature you control, except it's a 1/1 red Balloon creature in addition to its other colors and types and it has flying and haste. Sacrifice it at the beginning of the next end step. Activate only as a sorcery.
Guide
Gameplan
Each turn you tap The Jolly Balloon Man to make a temporary 1/1 flying copy of your best creature, abusing its enter-the-battlefield triggers (and its leave-the-battlefield triggers when sacrificed). You build a board of high-impact ETB creatures, then snowball value every turn while chipping in with hasty flyers, eventually generating overwhelming advantage or an outright combo loop.
Strengths
- Repeatable, mana-efficient copy effect that turns one good ETB creature into recurring value every turn
- Haste lets the balloon copies attack immediately, adding evasive damage
- Synergizes with both ETB and death/sacrifice payoffs since copies enter and die each turn
- Strong in aristocrats and token shells thanks to free fodder generation
Weaknesses
- Tokens vanish at end of turn, so the value is fragile and removal of the commander shuts it all off
- Copy ability is sorcery-speed and once-per-turn, limiting reactivity
- Needs a board of impactful creatures already present to do anything
- Vulnerable to graveyard hate and counters on the copy targets if relying on combos
Key Cards
- Dockside Extortionist — Copying it each turn generates a flood of Treasures off opponents' artifacts and enchantments.
- Blood Artist — Every balloon token dying at end step drains the table, turning copies into a clock.
- Pitiless Plunderer — Each sacrificed balloon token makes a Treasure, ramping you hard every turn.
- Elesh Norn, Mother of Machines — Doubles all your ETB triggers from the copies while shutting off opponents' triggers.
- Purphoros, God of the Forge — Each balloon token entering pings every opponent for 2, converting copies into burn.
- Combat Celebrant — Copying it grants repeatable extra combat steps for explosive aggressive turns.
Upgrade Path
Lean into the ETB-and-die double dip by adding payoffs like Purphoros, Impact Tremors, and Pitiless Plunderer alongside high-value copy targets such as Dockside Extortionist and Combat Celebrant. Tighten the mana base and add protection (Boots, Lightning Greaves) so the commander survives to activate, then add fast mana like Jeska's Will and a Dockside-based Treasure engine to enable explosive combo turns.
