Lightning, Army of One
The Commander
First strike, trample, lifelink
Stagger — Whenever Lightning deals combat damage to a player, until your next turn, if a source would deal damage to that player or a permanent that player controls, it deals double that damage instead.
Guide
Gameplan
Suit up Lightning with evasion and protection to land an early combat hit, then exploit Stagger to double all damage to that player for a turn — including a second Lightning swing, burn spells, and pingers. It's a Boros aggro/Voltron hybrid that snowballs from one connection into lethal, often killing a player in a single Stagger window.
Strengths
- Stagger turns even modest damage sources into game-enders, doubling combat, burn, and direct damage simultaneously
- Built-in first strike, trample, and lifelink make Lightning a self-sufficient attacker and lifegain engine
- Boros has cheap, efficient equipment and combat tricks to push early connects
- Punishes the whole table since you choose which opponent to lock under Stagger
Weaknesses
- Strongly commander-dependent — removing or chump-blocking Lightning stalls the engine
- Boros lacks card advantage and ramp compared to other color pairs
- Stagger only affects one player at a time, weak as a multiplayer board control tool
- Susceptible to fogs, flyers, and go-wide blockers that prevent the initial hit
Key Cards
- Fireblast — A free 4-damage burn becomes 8 under Stagger, often closing the game after a connect.
- Sword of Fire and Ice — Grants evasion-relevant protection plus a 2-damage trigger that doubles to 4 and draws a card.
- Embercleave — Cheap to cast off an attack and turns Lightning into an oversized doubled-damage threat.
- Aurelia, the Warleader — An extra combat phase lets you Stagger then swing again into the doubled damage for lethal.
- Berserkers' Onslaught — Gives all your attackers double strike, multiplying connections and Stagger payoffs.
- Fervor — Haste lets Lightning attack and start the Stagger lock the turn it lands.
Upgrade Path
Add fast mana and cheap protective equipment (Lightning Greaves, Swiftfoot Boots, Sword of Feast and Famine) to guarantee a turn-three or four connect and protect Lightning from removal. Layer in extra-combat enablers (Aggravated Assault, Combat Celebrant) and efficient burn to convert a single Stagger into a kill. Round out with Boros card-advantage pieces like Smothering Tithe and Mind's Eye to fight the color pair's card-flow weakness.

Win Conditions
- ▸Connect with Lightning, then swing again or stack burn for doubled lethal damage
- ▸Voltron Lightning to commander-damage one player out in one or two hits
- ▸Cast a big burn spell like Fireblast or Comet Storm into an active Stagger lock
- ▸Extra-combat chains funneling doubled damage through multiple attackers
Archetypes
- Voltron — Lightning's evasion suite makes it the ideal equipment/aura carrier to force damage through.
- Boros Aggro — Stagger rewards a wide, aggressive board that piles doubled combat damage onto one player.
- Burn/Spellslinger — Direct-damage spells deal double after a Stagger connect, enabling burst kills.
- Extra Combats — Additional combat phases let you trigger Stagger then re-attack into the doubled-damage window.
