Urabrask, Heretic Praetor
The Commander
Haste
At the beginning of your upkeep, exile the top card of your library. You may play it this turn.
At the beginning of each opponent's upkeep, the next time they would draw a card this turn, instead they exile the top card of their library. They may play it this turn.
Guide
Gameplan
Urabrask hands you a free impulse-drawn card every upkeep while turning each opponent's first draw of their turn into an impulse draw they must use that turn or lose. You snowball card advantage in mono-red while quietly hosing card-draw engines and wheels, then close with aggressive creatures, big haste threats, or burn fueled by all the extra cards.
Strengths
- Reliable extra card every turn in a color that normally struggles for card advantage
- Haste lets him attack or block the turn he lands and re-enables instantly after a kill
- Soft tax/denial on opponents' draw engines and wheels punishes blue card-advantage decks
- Pushes mono-red consistency by digging deeper each upkeep
Weaknesses
- Symmetric impulse on opponents can accidentally help them play lands and spells they'd have drawn anyway
- Mono-red's usual interaction gap leaves you weak to enchantments and resilient combo
- Costs 5 and dies to any removal, resetting your draw advantage
- Impulse-drawn cards are lost if unused, so flooding on lands or uncastable cards still hurts
Key Cards
- Birgi, God of Storytelling — Generates mana off every spell to actually cast the flood of impulse-drawn cards each turn.
- Bonus Round — Doubles your storm of cheap spells fueled by impulse draws for an explosive turn.
- Wheel of Misfortune — You refill while opponents' would-be draws get converted into one-shot impulse cards under Urabrask.
- Reckless Fireweaver — Turns the constant artifact/treasure churn and spell volume into incremental burn damage.
- Sensei's Divining Top — Sets up your impulse exile every upkeep to guarantee a usable card.
- Underworld Breach — Combo engine that recurs spells, easily abused with rituals and the extra cards Urabrask provides.
Upgrade Path
Lean into mana acceleration (Jeska's Will, rituals, treasure makers) and cost reducers so you never waste impulse cards, and add fast mana like Ancient Tomb and Mana Crypt. Add a dedicated combo line such as Underworld Breach plus Lion's Eye Diamond/Brain Freeze or an Aetherflux Reservoir kill to convert card volume into a win. Tighten the curve and include strong red interaction (Pyroblast, Abrade, Chaos Warp) to survive while the engine grinds.

Archetypes
- Spellslinger — Constant impulse cards feed a low-curve burn-and-storm shell with cost reducers and magecraft payoffs.
- Aggro/Voltron — Haste and a steady card stream keep pressure flowing while you swarm or suit up a threat.
- Stax/Hatebears — His upkeep ability soft-locks opponents' draw, pairing with wheels and resource denial.
- Combo — Extra card velocity in mono-red helps assemble rituals plus Underworld Breach or Aetherflux loops.
