Urza, Lord Protector
The Commander
Artifact, instant, and sorcery spells you cast cost less to cast.
: If you both own and control Urza, Lord Protector and an artifact named The Mightstone and Weakstone, exile them, then meld them into Urza, Planeswalker. Activate only as a sorcery.
Guide
Gameplan
Use Urza's cost reduction to chain cheap artifacts and spells, ramp into a powerful artifact/control engine, and either meld with The Mightstone and Weakstone for a game-warping planeswalker or assemble an artifact/spell-based combo. Turn to turn you cast efficient mana rocks, card advantage, and counters/removal while building toward an explosive payoff.
Strengths
- Discounts every artifact, instant, and sorcery you cast, enabling explosive turns and free combo pieces
- Access to UW's best counterspells, removal, and tutors for consistency
- Meld into Urza, Planeswalker gives a -3 sweeper and an ultimate that can end games
- Synergizes with cost-reduction stacking (Mishra's Bauble loops, free spells, storm-like sequencing)
Weaknesses
- Fragile 3-drop body that dies to any removal, resetting your engine
- Meld requires owning AND controlling both halves, making it slow and disruptable
- Color identity locks you out of green ramp and aggressive black tutors
- Vulnerable to artifact hate and stax pieces that tax your discounted spells back up
Key Cards
- The Mightstone and Weakstone — The required meld partner that, when combined with Urza, forms Urza, Planeswalker for a devastating swing.
- Urza, Planeswalker — The meld payoff: an immediate board wipe of opponents' nonland permanents and a game-winning ultimate.
- Mystic Forge — Lets you cast artifacts from the top of your library, snowballing with Urza's discount into massive card advantage.
- Sensei's Divining Top — Cheap recurring card selection that loops cheaply and fuels Mystic Forge-style engines.
- Teferi, Time Raveler — Protects your engine by stopping interaction on your turn and bouncing problem permanents.
- Smothering Tithe — Generates the heavy mana UW lacks to power out big artifacts and the meld activation.
Upgrade Path
Add fast mana and rocks (Mana Crypt, Mana Vault, Sol Ring, Grim Monolith) and free-spell enablers to abuse the discount. Lean into combo lines with Mystic Forge, Sensei's Divining Top, and infinite mana outlets, while packing UW's premium interaction (Force of Will, Swords to Plowshares, Cyclonic Rift) to protect Urza and the meld. Prioritize tutors like Whir of Invention and Tezzeret the Seeker to find The Mightstone and Weakstone reliably.

Archetypes
- Artifacts — Cost reduction on every artifact makes a dedicated artifact ramp/combo shell extremely efficient.
- Control — UW interaction plus discounted counters and removal lets you stall while assembling the meld.
- Spellslinger — Cheaper instants and sorceries support a cantrip-heavy, storm-leaning value engine.
- Combo — Free or near-free artifacts enable infinite mana and storm-style kills through Urza's discount.
