Vishgraz, the Doomhive
The Commander
Menace, toxic 1 (Players dealt combat damage by this creature also get a poison counter.)
When Vishgraz enters, create three 1/1 colorless Phyrexian Mite artifact creature tokens with toxic 1 and "This token can't block."
Vishgraz gets +1/+1 for each poison counter your opponents have.
Guide
Gameplan
Vishgraz is an Abzan poison engine: flood the board with toxic Mites and other infect/toxic creatures, chip poison counters onto each opponent, and watch Vishgraz balloon as a menacing finisher. You win either by stacking 10 poison counters on opponents or by swinging with a huge, evasive commander while your token army crashes in. Turn to turn you deploy go-wide threats, protect your creatures, and use anthems and proliferate to accelerate the poison clock.
Strengths
- Provides immediate board presence (three toxic Mites) plus a scaling threat in one card.
- Toxic gives an alternate win path (10 poison) that dodges lifegain and high life totals.
- Menace plus a constantly growing power makes Vishgraz hard to block and a fast clock.
- Abzan colors offer the best token, proliferate, anthem, and recursion support.
Weaknesses
- Heavily commander- and creature-reliant; board wipes set you back hard.
- Mites and Vishgraz die to spot removal, and the toxic plan is slow without proliferate.
- Three-color manabase and infect strategy paint a target on you politically.
- Lacks built-in card advantage—can run out of gas after a wipe.
Key Cards
- Grist, the Hunger Tide — Generates expendable insect tokens and recurs creatures to refuel your go-wide toxic board.
- Skithiryx, the Blight Dragon — An evasive, regenerating infect finisher that closes poison games fast alongside Vishgraz.
- Inkmoth Nexus — A manland with infect that proliferates the poison plan and survives sweepers.
- Anointed Procession — Doubles your Mite tokens and any other token production for explosive poison output.
- Cathars' Crusade — Pumps your entire toxic army with every creature you make, accelerating the clock dramatically.
Upgrade Path
Lean into proliferate engines (Evolution Sage, Karn's Bastion, Flux Channeler) to convert small poison chip damage into fast lethal totals. Add token doublers and anthems (Anointed Procession, Cathars' Crusade, Intangible Virtue) plus protection like Heroic Intervention and Teferi's Protection to survive wipes. Tighten the manabase with fetches, shocks, and Triomes, and add recursion (Skullclamp for card draw off Mites) to grind through removal.

Win Conditions
- ▸Stack 10 poison counters on each opponent via toxic and infect creatures plus proliferate.
- ▸Swing with a massive, menacing Vishgraz buffed by accumulated poison counters.
- ▸Go wide with toxic Mites under anthems like Cathars' Crusade for lethal combat.
- ▸Aristocrats drain (e.g., Blood Artist effects) while sacrificing your token army.
Archetypes
- Infect/Poison — Toxic Mites and infect creatures stack poison counters that also supercharge Vishgraz's size.
- Tokens — Vishgraz floods the board and Abzan token doublers turn each Mite into multiple poison sources.
- Aristocrats — Expendable Mites feed sacrifice outlets for drain, card draw, and recursion value.
- Proliferate — Proliferate effects multiply poison counters to race opponents to the 10-poison threshold.
