Thalia and The Gitrog Monster

Mana value4EDHREC#3,474

The Commander

First strike, deathtouch

You may play an additional land on each of your turns.

Creatures and nonbasic lands your opponents control enter tapped.

Whenever Thalia and The Gitrog Monster attacks, sacrifice a creature or land, then draw a card.

Guide

Gameplan

Deploy Thalia early as a first strike/deathtouch beater that taxes opponents by making their creatures and nonbasic lands enter tapped, slowing the whole table. Abuse the extra land drop plus the attack-trigger sacrifice to draw cards while feeding lands and creatures into recursion engines and aristocrat payoffs. Win through landfall value, repeated sacrifice loops, or just grinding the table out while they durdle through tapped permanents.

Strengths

  • Built-in card advantage every combat via the attack-trigger draw
  • First strike + deathtouch makes her a brutal attacker and blocker that trades up
  • Soft stax effect (tapped lands/creatures) cripples ramp, blockers, and counterspell mana
  • Extra land drop fuels landfall, lands-matter, and reanimation strategies
  • Three colors give access to the best removal, recursion, and tutors

Weaknesses

  • Mandatory sacrifice on attack can be painful without fodder or recursion in place
  • Four-mana commander that wants to attack, so removal-heavy tables slow you down
  • The tapped-lands effect doesn't slow you and can paint you as the archenemy
  • Wants a build-around shell; a generic goodstuff pile underuses the sacrifice synergy
  • Vulnerable to graveyard hate that shuts off land/creature recursion loops

Key Cards

  • Crucible of WorldsReplays lands sacrificed to her trigger from the graveyard, turning the cost into pure value.
  • Ramunap ExcavatorA creature version of land recursion that also feeds itself as sac fodder in a pinch.
  • Lotus FieldSac it to the trigger then replay it for huge mana with Crucible-style effects.
  • Dakmor SalvageDredge it back repeatedly to draw extra cards and reload the graveyard engine.
  • SkullclampTurns sacrificed and dying creatures into a relentless card-draw machine.
  • Smothering TithePunishes opponents and snowballs mana to fuel land-heavy combos and recursion.
  • Mayhem DevilEach land or creature sacrifice pings the table, building an incremental win condition.
  • Splendid ReclamationReturns every sacrificed land at once for an explosive landfall payoff.

Upgrade Path

Lean fully into a recursion engine: add Crucible of Worlds, Ramunap Excavator, and self-bouncing lands (Lotus Field, fetchlands) so the attack sacrifice always nets value. Layer aristocrats payoffs and a sacrifice loop (Dakmor Salvage dredge with a draw outlet, or Skullclamp on token makers) to convert grind into inevitability, and add fast mana plus efficient tutors like Survival of the Fittest and Crop Rotation to assemble pieces faster. Tighten removal and protection (Heroic Intervention, Teferi's Protection) since the table will target your engine.

Core Cards

The most-played cards for this commander, built from aggregated deck data (the Mythic Graph). Build public decks to seed it.

Win Conditions

  • Landfall payoffs (Lotus Cobra/Avenger of Zendikar style or Splendid Reclamation swings) overwhelming the board
  • Aristocrats drain with Blood Artist, Zulaport Cutthroat, and Mayhem Devil off sacrifice loops
  • Commander damage with first strike + deathtouch backed by anthems and equipment
  • Incremental card-advantage grind locking the table behind tapped lands and creatures

Archetypes

  • Lands / LandfallThe extra land drop, sacrifice-and-recur loops, and Crucible effects make her a premier lands-matter commander.
  • AristocratsThe attack trigger plus recurring fodder fuels sacrifice payoffs like Blood Artist and Mayhem Devil.
  • Stax / TaxMaking opponents' creatures and nonbasic lands enter tapped slows the table while you build value.
  • ReanimatorCheap loot-and-sacrifice effects bin big threats while green and black recursion bring them back.
