Felothar the Steadfast
The Commander
Each creature you control assigns combat damage equal to its toughness rather than its power.
Creatures you control can attack as though they didn't have defender.
,
, Sacrifice another creature: Draw cards equal to the sacrificed creature's toughness, then discard cards equal to its power.
Guide
Gameplan
Felothar turns toughness into both your offense and your card advantage, so you build a wall of high-toughness creatures and Walls-with-defender that suddenly become lethal attackers. You ramp into beefy defensive bodies, swing for damage equal to their toughness, and use the activated ability to sacrifice low-power/high-toughness blockers for a flood of cards. Close games by attacking with enormous toughness, going wide, or assembling toughness-payoff combos.
Strengths
- Doubles as removal-resistant card engine: sacrificing a high-toughness, low-power creature draws a pile of cards with little to no discard.
- Lets defensive Walls and defender creatures become real attackers, unlocking unique high-toughness beaters.
- Abzan colors offer the best ramp, removal, recursion, and toughness-matters support in the format.
- Turns normally durdly defensive shells into proactive threats, giving the deck two distinct axes of attack.
Weaknesses
- Toughness-based damage scales poorly with most pump and anthem effects that boost power, requiring deck-wide synergy.
- Felothar himself is fragile at 4 mana and a single board wipe can erase your toughness army.
- The draw ability costs
and a tap, making it slow to leverage early.
- Mass -X/-X effects and toughness reduction are devastating to the whole strategy.
Key Cards
- Doran, the Siege Tower — Redundant toughness-as-damage anchor that stacks perfectly with Felothar's combat rule for an unstoppable wall army.
- Assault Formation — Backup for toughness-deals-damage plus an anthem that pumps toughness, boosting both offense and card draw.
- Tree of Perdition — Massive toughness body that hits like a truck and draws a huge hand when sacrificed to Felothar.
- High Alert — Another toughness-damage redundancy that also lets your defenders attack and untaps for surprise blocks.
- Wall of Roots — Cheap ramp body with strong toughness that fuels both early defense and later card draw.
- Indrik Stomphowler — Representative of toughness-matters payoffs; the deck wants creatures whose toughness vastly exceeds power.
Upgrade Path
Lean harder into toughness payoffs like Doran, Arcades, the Strategist effects, and counter-based toughness boosters (Branching Evolution, Hardened Scales) to amplify both combat and draws. Add cheap, recurring sacrifice fodder and reanimation (Reassembling Skeleton, Glissa Sunslayer, Eternal Witness) to keep the engine humming, plus protection like Heroic Intervention and Teferi's Protection against the board wipes that threaten your whole army. Tighten the mana with fast rocks and dual lands so you can reliably deploy a four-drop commander and immediately use the draw ability.

Win Conditions
- ▸Swinging in with enormous-toughness creatures for lethal combat damage.
- ▸Going wide with toughness anthems like Assault Formation for a big alpha strike.
- ▸Out-grinding opponents on cards via repeated Felothar sacrifices, then closing with overwhelming board presence.
- ▸Toughness-doubling effects (e.g., infinite-style pump or proliferate counters) pushing single attackers to lethal.
Archetypes
- Toughness-Matters Midrange — Felothar makes every creature deal damage by toughness, rewarding a deck of beefy, high-defense bodies.
- Walls/Defender Aggro — His attack-as-though-no-defender clause turns Walls into legitimate threats.
- Aristocrats/Value Sacrifice — The sacrifice-for-cards ability monetizes dying creatures and chump blockers into massive draws.
- Stax/Control — High-toughness defensive bodies hold the ground while you grind out incremental card advantage.
