Wilhelt, the Rotcleaver
The Commander
Whenever another Zombie you control dies, if it didn't have decayed, create a 2/2 black Zombie creature token with decayed. (It can't block. When it attacks, sacrifice it at end of combat.)
At the beginning of your end step, you may sacrifice a Zombie. If you do, draw a card.
Guide
Gameplan
Wilhelt is a UB Zombie tribal engine that turns every zombie death into a fresh decayed token, then converts those tokens into cards each end step. You flood the board with zombies, sacrifice them for value and damage, and grind the table out with relentless card advantage before closing with an overrun, drain, or aristocrats combo.
Strengths
- Self-sustaining card draw engine that refuels every turn end
- Wide, resilient board that punishes wraths via decayed token replacement
- Excellent fodder for sacrifice payoffs and aristocrats drains
- Deep, well-supported tribe in two strong colors
Weaknesses
- Heavy reliance on the commander; without Wilhelt the engine stalls
- Decayed tokens can't block, leaving you vulnerable to aggression
- Tokens are small and need anthems or sac payoffs to deal real damage
- Vulnerable to graveyard hate and token-hate (Cursed Totem, Torpor-style effects)
Key Cards
- Gravecrawler — Recurs from the graveyard endlessly to feed Wilhelt's draw and any sac outlet for infinite-ish value.
- Viscera Seer — Free sac outlet that lets you loop dying zombies into decayed tokens and combo lines.
- Diregraf Captain — Anthem plus drain that pings each opponent every time a zombie dies, turning tokens into a kill engine.
- Carrion Feeder — Repeatable free sac outlet that grows and triggers Wilhelt's token generation.
- Plague Belcher — Throws decayed damage onto opponents and provides a sac engine with anthem-style stats.
- Open the Graves — Doubles up token creation on every nontoken zombie death, compounding the board.
Upgrade Path
Add free sacrifice outlets (Carrion Feeder, Viscera Seer, Ashnod's Altar) and drain payoffs (Bastion of Remembrance, Blood Artist) to assemble Gravecrawler combos. Improve mana with dual lands and fast rocks, and slot tutors like Diabolic Intent and recursion like Phyrexian Reclamation to find and rebuy key pieces. Round out with stax-light protection (Imp's Mischief, counterspells) and graveyard-hate insurance to keep your engine online.
