Toxrill, the Corrosive
The Commander
At the beginning of each end step, put a slime counter on each creature you don't control.
Creatures you don't control get -1/-1 for each slime counter on them.
Whenever a creature you don't control with a slime counter on it dies, create a 1/1 black Slug creature token.
, Sacrifice a Slug: Draw a card.
Guide
Gameplan
Toxrill is a one-card board wipe engine that grinds the whole table to death over a few turns. Once he sticks, every opponent's creature accumulates slime counters each end step and shrinks until it dies, handing you a swarm of Slug tokens. Convert those Slugs into cards and value while you protect Toxrill and close with evasive damage or attrition.
Strengths
- Repeatable, asymmetric board control that punishes creature-heavy tables without you committing extra cards
- Generates a steady stream of Slug tokens for card draw, sacrifice fodder, and chump blocking
- Powerful card advantage engine via the Slug-to-draw ability in grindy games
- Dominant against go-wide token and aggro decks that can't profitably commit creatures
Weaknesses
- Seven mana and an obvious removal magnet—if he dies, the engine stops cold
- Slow clock; he controls boards but doesn't win on his own, so games can drag
- Weak against artifact, enchantment, planeswalker, and combo decks that ignore creatures
- Commander tax and reanimation reliance make repeated recasting taxing
- Color pair lacks efficient creature recursion and broad removal outside counters
Key Cards
- Reconstruction — Cheap recursion to return Toxrill or another threat after the inevitable removal.
- Whispersilk Cloak — Unblockable and shroud protect Toxrill so the wipe engine keeps running.
- Swiftfoot Boots — Hexproof and haste shield him from targeted removal the turn he lands.
- Cyclonic Rift — Overloaded, it clears anything Toxrill can't while leaving your board intact.
- Black Market Connections — Turns your Slug-heavy, attrition-based plan into relentless card and mana advantage.
- Toxic Deluge — A scalable second wipe that bypasses indestructible and clears threats Toxrill is too slow for.
- Rhystic Study — Stacks with the Slug draw engine to bury opponents in cards during long games.
Upgrade Path
Add fast mana (Mana Vault, Fellwar Stone, signets) to deploy Toxrill ahead of curve and protection like Heroic Intervention. Lean into aristocrats payoffs (Blood Artist, Zulaport Cutthroat, Dictate of Erebos) so the constant deaths actually win, and add reanimation/flicker (Reanimate, Ghostly Flicker) to rebuy him cheaply. Top end with Cyclonic Rift, Toxic Deluge, and a clean wincon like Craterhoof-style overrun or a quiet combo to avoid stalling out.
Core Cards
The most-played cards for this commander, built from aggregated deck data (the Mythic Graph). Build public decks to seed it.
Win Conditions
- ▸Grind the table out of creatures, then attack with Slugs and an unblockable Toxrill
- ▸Aristocrats drain via Blood Artist/Zulaport Cutthroat as opponents' creatures die in droves
- ▸Convert overwhelming Slug-token advantage into a go-wide alpha strike with an anthem
- ▸Out-card-advantage the table and close with a value finisher like a big spell or combo
Archetypes
- Control — Toxrill is a perpetual asymmetric wrath, so the deck plays counters, removal, and protection to stall.
- Aristocrats — Endless Slug tokens feed sacrifice outlets, drain effects, and the built-in card-draw ability.
- Attrition/Stax — Grinding opponents out of creatures pairs well with taxing pieces and resource denial.
- Tokens — The Slug factory supports anthems, sac payoffs, and going wide as the board clears.
