Land
LegalEDHREC #43
, Pay 1 life, Sacrifice this land: Search your library for a Swamp or Mountain card, put it onto the battlefield, then shuffle.
Why is this card good?
Bloodstained Mire is one of the original Onslaught fetchlands, and it's a staple for a reason: fixing plus deck-thinning plus synergy.
In any deck running black or red, it fetches a Swamp or Mountain (including dual lands with those basic types — Blood Crypt, Watery Grave with Hallowed Fountain, shocks, Triomes, etc.), so it's far more flexible than it looks. The life payment is trivial in most pods.
The real upside in Commander is the synergy density:
- Landfall (Lotus Cobra, Tatyova) — triggers twice.
- Graveyard matters (Tarmogoyf, Crucible of Worlds, delirium) — puts a land type in your yard instantly.
- Sac/death synergies and shuffle effects (Brainstorm).
- Thins your deck slightly, smoothing draws.
When NOT to play it: if you're not running black or red, it does nothing but pay you life for a basic. In budget builds, the price rarely justifies it over a Terramorphic Expanse or basic. And in heavy life-loss aggro/aristocrats mirrors, the incidental damage can add up — but that's rarely a real concern.
