Why is this card good?
Verdant Catacombs is a premium fetchland — one of the original Zendikar fetches — and it's an auto-include in basically any deck running black and/or green.
Why it's great:
- Fixes mana perfectly, grabbing any Swamp or Forest (including dual lands with those types — shocks, Triomes, typed duals).
- Thins your library slightly and, more importantly, enables shuffle/landfall/delirium/landfall and graveyard synergies.
- The 1 life cost is trivial in Commander's 40-life-equivalent games.
Who wants it:
- Any Golgari, Sultai, Jund, Abzan, or mono-B/mono-G deck. It's mana-fixing glue.
- Decks that care about landfall (Lord Windgrace, Omnath), shuffle effects, or fetching specific land types for Field of the Dead / Valakut style payoffs.
- Cabal Coffers / Urborg ramp shells love guaranteeing the Swamp count.
When to skip it:
- Budget builds — these run $20+ and the upside over a tapland or basic is marginal unless you're optimizing.
