Abuelo, Ancestral Echo
The Commander
Flying, ward
: Exile another target creature or artifact you control. Return it to the battlefield under its owner's control at the beginning of the next end step.
Guide
Gameplan
Abuelo is a blink/protection engine: hold up to flicker your best ETB creatures for repeated value, dodge targeted removal and board wipes, and reset auras/counters. Build a value-engine deck around enters-the-battlefield triggers and finish by snowballing card advantage and board presence into a controlling win.
Strengths
- Built-in protection: ward
plus the ability to flicker himself or threats out of removal at instant speed
- Repeatable ETB abuse from a 3-mana commander, generating relentless card and board advantage
- Can save a creature from board wipes by exiling it and returning it after the wipe resolves
- Flying body that can chip in or wear equipment while the ability does the work
- Endless flexibility in blue-white: counters, wraths, and flicker payoffs all fit
Weaknesses
- Ability is mana-intensive (3 mana per activation) and only targets one permanent at a time
- UW lacks fast ramp and direct damage, so closing games can be slow
- Reliant on having strong ETB creatures in play to convert mana into value
- Vulnerable while tapped out; the protection only works if you've kept mana open
- No native card advantage outside the engine—dead draws when the board is empty
Key Cards
- Mulldrifter — Classic flicker target that refills your hand each time Abuelo blinks it.
- Eternal Witness — Repeatable recursion that turns the blink engine into a graveyard toolbox.
- Restoration Angel — Flash flicker that doubles as protection and another evasive blink payoff.
- Solitude — Free removal whose ETB exile can be reused every turn via Abuelo.
- Swords to Plowshares — Premier cheap removal to hold the board while your engine grinds.
- Esper Sentinel — Cheap card-advantage engine that fits the controlling, mana-open gameplan.
Upgrade Path
Add the Evoke elementals (Solitude, Subtlety) and premium ETB value creatures (Snapcaster Mage, Sun Titan) to maximize each activation, then improve the mana with fast rocks like Arcane Signet, Mana Crypt, and Smothering Tithe. Tighten the control suite with cheap interaction (Counterspell, Cyclonic Rift, Swords to Plowshares) and consider an infinite-value combo line such as blinking a token-doubler or ETB drainer for a clean kill.

Win Conditions
- ▸Snowball overwhelming card and board advantage from repeated ETB triggers
- ▸Flicker an ETB removal/finisher (e.g., a bouncer or damage trigger) to grind opponents out
- ▸Combo finishes pairing the blink engine with infinite mana or ETB payoffs
- ▸Beat down with evasive flyers and value creatures while controlling the board
Archetypes
- Blink — His exile-and-return ability is a tunable, repeatable flicker engine for ETB value.
- Control — UW counters and wraths plus self-protection let him grind out attrition wars.
- Value Midrange — Stacking ETB creatures turns each activation into incremental advantage.
- Combo — Loops with infinite-mana outlets or ETB-payoff creatures can close games.
