Alena, Kessig Trapper
The Commander
First strike
: Add an amount of
equal to the greatest power among creatures you control that entered this turn.
Partner (You can have two commanders if both have partner.)
Guide
Gameplan
Drop big-power creatures, then tap Alena to generate a mountain of red mana equal to your largest fresh attacker, dumping it into more haymakers or X-spells in a single explosive turn. You ramp into oversized threats early and snowball, often pairing Alena with a partner to add another color or payoff. The deck wins by chaining creatures and burning the table out with that surplus mana.
Strengths
- Generates absurd amounts of mana off a single big creature, enabling huge turns
- Partner slot lets you splash a second color and second strategy
- First strike makes her a respectable attacker and combat blocker
- Rewards a curve you'd build anyway in red beatdown/ramp
Weaknesses
- Mana only counts creatures that entered THIS turn, so timing and sequencing matter
- Heavily reliant on Alena staying untapped and untargeted—removal stalls you
- Mono-red without partner struggles with card advantage and interaction
- Summoning sickness and tap requirement make her clunky the turn she lands
- No evasion or protection built in
Key Cards
- Jegantha, the Wellspring — Classic partner-style payoff and color source, but more importantly big-mana commanders pair well with mana sinks.
- Halana, Kessig Ranger — Her intended partner; gives reach/fight removal and a second creature-centric commander to fill the second color slot... actually mono-R, but Halana is also red and a natural pairing.
- Apex Devastator — A massive-power creature whose cascade fills the board and whose power fuels enormous Alena mana.
- Goldspan Dragon — Doubles treasure and rewards the explosive mana Alena produces while being a sizable attacker.
- Comet Storm — X burn spell that dumps Alena's mana directly into the table for the kill.
- Fireshrieker — Cheap equipment that turns big first-strikers into double-strike finishers via commander damage.
- Swiftfoot Boots — Protects Alena from targeted removal so her mana engine keeps running.
Upgrade Path
Add untappers like Thousand-Year Elixir, Sword of the Paruns, or Magewright's Stone to loop Alena with a big creature for infinite mana, then close with an X-burn outlet. Pick a partner that adds card advantage or a second color payoff, and lean on haste enablers and protection (Lightning Greaves, Heroic Intervention) so her mana comes online immediately and survives. Prioritize cheap big-power creatures and treasure/ritual support to push explosive early turns.

- Stompy/Beatdown — Fat first-striking creatures pressure life totals while feeding her tap ability.
- Voltron — First strike plus double-strike equipment lets her deal lethal commander damage.
