Gadwick, the Wizened
The Commander
When Gadwick enters, draw X cards.
Whenever you cast a blue spell, tap target nonland permanent an opponent controls.
Guide
Gameplan
Gadwick is a mono-blue value engine that turns your spell count into card advantage and a soft lock. Cast him for a big X to refill your hand, then chain cheap blue spells to tap down opposing blockers, attackers, and key permanents while you assemble a controlling board. You win by overwhelming with card advantage and eventually a finisher or combo, all while keeping the table tapped out.
Strengths
- Enters as a scalable draw spell — cast for X=5+ to refill your hand instantly
- Every blue spell taps a permanent, neutralizing blockers and mana rocks for free
- Mono-blue gives access to the format's best card draw, counters, and interaction
- Cheap recast value if he dies, since the ETB always draws X cards
Weaknesses
- Mono-color means no access to removal for noncreatures, enchantments, or strong sweepers
- Tapping permanents is tempo, not permanent answers — doesn't stop activated abilities or unstop walkers untaps
- Heavy reliance on the commander; repeated removal taxes you despite cheap recast
- Can be slow to actually close games without a dedicated win package
Key Cards
- Wilderness Reclamation — Doubles your mana by untapping lands at end of step, fueling a massive Gadwick X or extra blue spells.
- High Tide — Explosive blue mana ramp to power out a huge Gadwick and chain spells in one turn.
- Mystic Remora — Cheap repeatable card advantage that keeps your hand stocked with blue spells to trigger Gadwick.
- Cyclonic Rift — The premier mono-blue board state reset that doubles as a Gadwick tap trigger.
- Thassa's Oracle — A clean win condition that pairs with self-mill or deck manipulation to end games.
- Reservoir of Knowledge — Tap-down synergy lets you keep opposing threats locked while you draw out of any situation.
Upgrade Path
Add fast mana (Mana Crypt, Sol Ring, Mana Vault) and more untap engines (Wilderness Reclamation, Seedborn Muse, High Tide) to enable a one-turn explosive Gadwick. Tighten the win package with a compact combo like Thassa's Oracle plus reliable self-mill, or infinite mana into a lethal Gadwick draw. Lean into cheap cantrips and protection (Swan Song, Veil of Summer-style mono-blue counters, Heroic Intervention is off-color so use Tamiyo's Safekeeping or counterspells) to defend your engine.

Win Conditions
- ▸Thassa's Oracle / Laboratory Maniac with an emptied or near-empty library
- ▸Pump Gadwick himself to enormous size and beat down (his X-counter potential or +1/+1 effects)
- ▸Infinite mana into a giant Gadwick X to draw out the deck, then mill/Oracle for the win
- ▸Grind out a controlling board and win with an evasive finisher like a hexproof beater
Archetypes
- Control — Mono-blue counters and bounce plus Gadwick's tap effect keep opponents from developing.
- Spellslinger — Each blue spell cast both advances your plan and taps an opposing permanent.
- Combo — Card draw and big mana setups let you find and assemble combos like Thassa's Oracle or infinite mana lines.
- Big Mana / Storm — High Tide and ritual-style untaps turn Gadwick into a one-shot draw-your-deck and storm engine.
