Grumgully, the Generous
The Commander
Each other non-Human creature you control enters with an additional +1/+1 counter on it.
Guide
Gameplan
Grumgully turns every non-Human creature into a value engine, adding a +1/+1 counter as they enter the battlefield. You flood the board with non-Human tokens and ETB creatures, then leverage the counters with persist combos or a big overrun finish. The deck plays a midrange tempo game, snowballing on the battlefield until you alpha strike or combo off.
Strengths
- Cheap three-mana commander that immediately impacts the board
- Enables persist infinite combos that net a permanent counter
- Excellent synergy with token swarms and +1/+1 counter payoffs
- Gruul aggression backed by efficient ramp and recursion
Weaknesses
- The +1/+1 buff is irrelevant to Human creatures, slightly narrowing card pool
- Board wipes can devastate a counter-based go-wide strategy
- Lacks card draw and interaction inherent to Gruul colors
- Combos rely on a sacrifice/free-sac outlet plus persist creature to assemble
Key Cards
- Kitchen Finks — With Grumgully, persist cancels with the +1/+1 counter, enabling infinite ETB/death loops with a sac outlet.
- Murderous Redcap — Same persist interaction plus a free sac outlet creates infinite damage to all opponents.
- Goblin Bombardment — Free sacrifice outlet that turns infinite persist loops into an instant win and provides repeatable removal.
- Cathars' Crusade — Each non-Human entering triggers both Grumgully and Crusade, exploding your board's power level fast.
- Craterhoof Behemoth — Caps off the go-wide plan with a massive overrun that's already buffed by counters.
- Goblin Sharpshooter — Combos with persist creatures and provides repeatable removal as a non-Human shaman.
Upgrade Path
Tighten the persist combo package—run Goblin Bombardment, Viscera Seer, and Ashnod's Altar as free sac outlets alongside Kitchen Finks and Murderous Redcap for reliable wins. Add fast mana like Sol Ring, Birds of Paradise, and Ignoble Hierarch plus tutors such as Chord of Calling and Goblin Recruiter to assemble combos faster. Round out with proliferate and protection (Heroic Intervention) so a single board wipe doesn't end your game.
