The Commander
When Joshua enters, discard up to two cards, then draw that many cards.
,
: Exile Joshua, then return it to the battlefield transformed under its owner's control. Activate only as a sorcery.
(As this Saga enters and after your draw step, add a lore counter.)
I, II — Rising Flames — Phoenix deals 2 damage to each opponent.
III — Flames of Rebirth — Return any number of target creature cards with total mana value 6 or less from your graveyard to the battlefield. Exile Phoenix, then return it to the battlefield (front face up).
Flying, lifelink
Guide
Gameplan
Joshua flips into Phoenix to ping each opponent for 2 twice, then reanimates a chunk of creatures from your graveyard before flipping back to ping again. You loot to fill the yard early, set up cheap creatures to dump and recur, and grind incremental damage plus repeatable reanimation into a board that overwhelms the table.
Strengths
- Built-in card filtering on every flip keeps your hand full and stocks the graveyard
- Repeatable reanimation of multiple sub-6-MV creatures generates relentless value
- Free recurring direct damage hits all opponents and chips lifegain via lifelink
- Resilient commander loop — exiles and returns dodge sorcery-speed removal windows
Weaknesses
- Slow clock: 2 damage per opponent per cycle won't close fast without help
- Mana-hungry — the
flip plus the saga's natural timing eat resources
- Reliant on having creatures in the graveyard before the saga's chapter III
- Vulnerable while a body on the battlefield to spot removal between activations
- Boros lacks ramp and card draw outside Joshua himself
Key Cards
- Sun Titan — A 6-MV reanimation target that itself recurs Joshua and cheap permanents each combat.
- Anguished Unmaking — Premium Boros interaction to clear blockers or threats while you grind value.
- Dockside Extortionist — Cheap creature that ramps explosively and is a perfect chapter III reanimation target to re-trigger.
- Wheel of Misfortune — Refills your hand and dumps fat creatures into the yard for Phoenix to reanimate.
- Smothering Tithe — Fixes Boros's notorious ramp problem so you can flip and reanimate every turn.
- Goldnight Commander — Turns each reanimated creature wave into a massive anthem-fueled attack.
Upgrade Path
Add real ramp and fixing (Smothering Tithe, mana rocks, Wayfarer's Bauble) so you can flip Joshua and pay the saga loop every turn. Lean into a graveyard-filling package (Faithless Looting, wheels, self-mill) plus impactful sub-6-MV reanimation targets and ETB value creatures. To push toward high power, add damage multipliers like Torbran and a sacrifice-drain engine (Blood Artist, Zulaport Cutthroat) to convert the recursion loop into a fast, inevitable kill.
Core Cards

Win Conditions
- ▸Repeated Phoenix damage triggers plus extra ping doublers like Torbran whittling the table down
- ▸Reanimating a wide board and swinging with anthem/sacrifice payoffs
- ▸Aristocrats drain loops fueled by recurring cheap creatures
- ▸Lifelink flier beats backed by go-wide token or reanimation assaults
Archetypes
- Reanimator — Chapter III returns multiple creatures totaling 6 or less MV from the graveyard repeatedly.
- Aristocrats — Looping cheap creatures into play pairs with sacrifice payoffs for incremental drain.
- Spellslinger/Burn — The Phoenix side pings all opponents and supports a noncreature damage shell with extra triggers.
- Blink/Value — Repeated exile-and-return effects synergize with ETB-creature engines and recursion.
