Karrthus, Tyrant of Jund
The Commander
Flying, haste
When Karrthus enters, gain control of all Dragons, then untap all Dragons.
Other Dragon creatures you control have haste.
Guide
Gameplan
Karrthus is a Jund Dragon tribal commander that hits the battlefield as a 7/7 flier with haste, immediately giving all your Dragons haste and stealing every opponent's Dragon in the process. You ramp into him early, flood the board with efficient Dragons, and swing for huge evasive damage. Late game he doubles as a one-sided Insurrection against rival Dragon decks.
Strengths
- Immediate haste enables alpha strikes the turn Dragons land
- Steals opponents' Dragons on entry, swinging board state in mirror/Dragon matchups
- Jund colors give the best ramp, removal, and recursion in tribal
- Strong evasive clock—most Dragons fly and hit hard
- Recasting Karrthus repeatedly re-grants haste and can re-steal Dragons
Weaknesses
- Seven mana commander is vulnerable to removal for a heavy investment
- Dragon tribal is top-heavy and clunky on low curves
- Stealing Dragons only matters if opponents play them
- No built-in card advantage or protection in the command zone
- Board wipes hit your expensive creature base hard
Key Cards
- Dragon Tempest — Turns every Dragon's entry into burn damage and grants haste, snowballing fast with Karrthus out.
- Dragonlord's Servant — Cost reduction that helps you deploy your top-heavy Dragon curve faster.
- Sarkhan, Fireblood — Card draw and ramp tied specifically to Dragons, fueling the whole engine.
- Crux of Fate — Asymmetric wrath that wipes the board but spares your Dragons.
- Utvara Hellkite — Makes a 6/6 Dragon for each attacking Dragon, ending games quickly with a wide board.
- Scion of the Ur-Dragon — Tutors any Dragon to the battlefield, fetching your best threats or finishers.
Upgrade Path
Add more ramp and cost reduction (Sol Ring, Arcane Signet, Dragonlord's Servant, Goreclaw) to deploy Dragons ahead of curve, and include reanimation (Reanimate, Animate Dead) to cheat out finishers. Tighten the curve with payoff Dragons like Terror of the Peaks and Old Gnawbone, and add protection such as Heroic Intervention and Lightning Greaves to defend Karrthus and your board from wipes.
