Mirko, Obsessive Theorist
The Commander
Flying, vigilance
Whenever you surveil, put a +1/+1 counter on Mirko.
At the beginning of your end step, you may return target creature card with power less than Mirko's from your graveyard to the battlefield with a finality counter on it. (If it would die, exile it instead.)
Guide
Gameplan
Surveil to grow Mirko while filling your graveyard, then each end step reanimate a creature with power less than Mirko's from your yard. You snowball Mirko's size and value engine, recurring strong utility and ETB creatures every turn for incremental advantage that overwhelms the table.
Strengths
- Built-in recursion every end step generates relentless card advantage
- Surveil synergies make Mirko grow huge, raising your reanimation ceiling
- Flying and vigilance make him an evasive, defensible commander
- Lives in deep Dimir card-quality/control package
Weaknesses
- Reanimation is capped by Mirko's power, so you need to grow him first
- Finality counters mean reanimated creatures exile if they die again, limiting reuse
- Heavily commander-dependent; loses tempo if Mirko is removed repeatedly
- Lacks reach against fast combo without dedicated interaction
Key Cards
- Dredgers' Insight — Repeatable surveil that both grows Mirko and stocks your graveyard with reanimation targets.
- Otherworldly Gaze — Cheap double surveil triggers two counters and digs while loading the yard.
- Crow of Dark Tidings — Self-mills and a low-power body that's easy to keep reanimating and chump-blocking.
- Eaten Alive — Surveil-tied removal that triggers Mirko while answering threats.
- Gravecrawler — Cheap recursive body, though finality counters change how you sequence it.
- Reflections of Littjara — Doubles your surveil triggers, accelerating Mirko's growth and your filtering.
- Body Launderer — Surveil-on-attack with deathtouch flavor that fuels counters and card flow.
Upgrade Path
Add cheap, repeatable surveil enablers and doublers (Reflections of Littjara, Bloodchief's Thirst, fetch-style filtering) to grow Mirko quickly and reliably. Lean into low-power ETB and recursion creatures so the end-step trigger always has a strong target, and include protection like Swiftfoot Boots or counterspells to keep Mirko online. Top-end can graduate to genuine reanimation payoffs and a tight aristocrats package once Mirko regularly exceeds 4-5 power.
