Nymris, Oona's Trickster
The Commander
Flying
Whenever you cast your first spell during each opponent's turn, look at the top two cards of your library. Put one of those cards into your hand and the other into your graveyard.
Guide
Gameplan
Nymris rewards you for holding up instant-speed interaction and flashing in spells on opponents' turns, drawing and filling your graveyard one card at a time. You play a reactive Dimir control/tempo game—countering, removing, and stealing—while accumulating card advantage every turn cycle. Eventually you bury opponents under raw card quality or assemble a flash-based combo or evasive beatdown.
Strengths
- Free card advantage and selection on every opponent's turn just by playing reactively
- Cheap evasive flying body with flash lets you hold up mana then deploy at instant speed
- Flash and Black/Blue access top-tier interaction (counters, removal, bounce)
- Graveyard filling synergizes with reanimation and flashback payoffs
- Excellent in the control seat without spending your own turns committing
Weaknesses
- Only triggers on your FIRST spell each opponent's turn—extra spells give no value
- Relies on having interaction in hand; can flood on lands or do nothing proactively
- Weak board presence; loses to wide go-wide and big creature decks if unanswered
- Commander costs five mana and dies to spot removal, costing tempo
- No inherent way to close the game without dedicated win conditions
Key Cards
- Leyline of Anticipation — Gives all your spells flash so you can always cast on opponents' turns to trigger Nymris and stay reactive.
- Vedalken Orrery — Redundant flash enabler that turns your whole hand into instant-speed plays, maximizing Nymris triggers.
- Fierce Guardianship — Free counterspell with Nymris on board that also triggers his card draw on an opponent's turn.
- Mystic Remora — Cheap repeatable card advantage that pairs with Nymris to keep your hand stocked with interaction.
- Snapcaster Mage — Flash creature that recasts the instants Nymris dumps into your graveyard, doubling your value.
- Notion Thief — Flash threat that punishes opponents' draws and synergizes with the instant-speed gameplan.
Upgrade Path
Add more free or low-cost interaction (Fierce Guardianship, Deflecting Swat, Mana Drain) and flash enablers (Leyline of Anticipation, Vedalken Orrery) to guarantee triggers every turn. Tighten the mana base with fast rocks and dual lands, then add a compact win condition like Thassa's Oracle plus Demonic Consultation or a reanimation package to convert your card advantage into a kill before the game stalls.

Win Conditions
- ▸Grind out card advantage and close with evasive flyers or a finisher like Consecrated Sphinx engine
- ▸Reanimate a large threat milled by Nymris and beat down
- ▸Flash-based combo such as Thassa's Oracle after drawing the deck, or infinite mana payoffs
- ▸Steal opponents' threats with reanimation/control magic and turn them sideways
Archetypes
- Control — Nymris turns held-up interaction into card advantage, making the long reactive game his natural home.
- Flash — His trigger and flash keyword reward an entire deck built around instant-speed permanents and spells.
- Spellslinger — Cheap instants and sorceries fuel both his trigger and finishers while bins fill for recursion.
- Reanimator — Nymris self-mills useful targets each turn that black reanimation spells can cheat back.
