Phenax, God of Deception
The Commander
Indestructible
As long as your devotion to blue and black is less than seven, Phenax isn't a creature.
Creatures you control have ": Target player mills X cards, where X is this creature's toughness."
Guide
Gameplan
Phenax turns your whole board into a mill engine: tap creatures to grind opponents' libraries based on each creature's toughness. You ramp into fatties or token swarms with high toughness, then mill one or more players out before they can win. Early turns set up high-toughness defenders and recursion; mid-game you tap out to dump 30-100+ cards per opponent.
Strengths
- Mill scales explosively with high-toughness creatures and wide boards
- Indestructible commander that's hard to remove and cheap to recur
- Doesn't need combat damage, so walls and defensive creatures become threats
- Blue/black gives premier card draw, removal, and counterspells to protect the plan
Weaknesses
- Mill is one of the slower win conditions and folds to fast combo/aggro
- Graveyard recursion and 'shuffle into library' effects (Gaea's Blessing, Elixir of Immortality) blank you
- Relies on having creatures untapped; board wipes set you back hard
- Three-opponent mill is a heavy lift in pods—often must commit fully and can't race
Key Cards
- Wall of Frost — Cheap defender with massive toughness mills a huge chunk each turn while blocking.
- Doorkeeper — With ten devotion its toughness milling is enormous, and it has built-in mill synergy.
- Consuming Aberration — Its toughness scales with how much you've already milled, snowballing into one-shot mill kills.
- Wall of Tanglecord — Eight toughness for three mana is pure efficiency for Phenax's ability.
- Intruder Alarm — Untaps your creatures whenever a creature enters, enabling repeated mill activations for a near-instant kill.
- Mesmeric Orb — Adds passive incremental mill that punishes any untapping and stacks with your activations.
Upgrade Path
Add untap engines (Intruder Alarm, Kiora's Follower, Thousand-Year Elixir) and toughness payoffs to break parity and mill faster, then bolster protection with counterspells and graveyard-hate answers like Bojuka Bog to stop recursion. Lean into a token or 'enters' subtheme so Intruder Alarm goes infinite, and include strong card advantage (Rhystic Study, Mystic Remora) plus interaction so the slow clock survives the table.

Win Conditions
- ▸Mill all opponents out by tapping high-toughness creatures over several turns
- ▸Intruder Alarm plus a token producer for an infinite/near-infinite mill loop
- ▸Consuming Aberration or other large creatures one-shotting libraries
- ▸Backup damage from milled-out players drawing on empty libraries
Archetypes
- Mill — Phenax's toughness-based mill ability is the entire premise and your primary kill.
- Control — UB lets you counter, remove, and stall while grinding libraries to zero.
- Tokens — Wide boards of even modest-toughness tokens add up to lethal mill totals.
- Stax — Tapping down and locking opponents buys the time mill needs to close.
