The Commander

Thopters you control have haste.

Whenever you play a land from exile or cast a spell from exile, create a 1/1 colorless Thopter artifact creature token with flying.

Guide

Gameplan

Pia Nalaar turns impulsive exile-and-play effects into a steady stream of hasty flying Thopters. You set up cheap impulse-draw and exile engines, cast everything off the top of your library to flood the board with attackers, then overrun with anthems or sacrifice the swarm for value. The deck wins through repeated incremental advantage and a wide, evasive army.

Strengths

  • Generates evasive flying tokens for free off cards you were already going to cast
  • Built-in haste makes every Thopter immediately relevant for offense or blocking
  • Cheap two-mana commander that snowballs quickly and is easy to recast
  • Synergizes with Boros's deep pool of impulse-draw effects that are otherwise underused
  • Token swarm plays well with anthems, sacrifice, and artifact payoffs

Weaknesses

  • Wide boards are extremely vulnerable to sweepers like Wrath of God and Blasphemous Act
  • Thopters are 1/1s, so the deck stalls hard without anthems or evasion payoffs
  • Boros lacks ramp and card draw outside of impulse effects, leading to inconsistency
  • Removal-heavy metas can strip Pia and slow the engine to a crawl
  • Triggers are gated behind playing cards specifically from exile, requiring careful deck curation

Key Cards

  • Wandering ArchaicDoubles as a tax piece while you build a board that punishes spellcasting.
  • Etali, Primal StormCasts multiple spells from exile in one swing, generating a flock of Thopters.
  • Outpost SiegeRepeatable impulse draw that triggers Pia every upkeep on the Khans mode.
  • Birgi, God of StorytellingHer Harnfel side and ritual support fuel casting cards from exile for extra Thopters.
  • SkullclampTurns your endless 1/1 Thopters into a card-draw engine that refuels the gas.
  • Coordinated AssaultCheap anthem-style pumps and overrun effects convert your flying swarm into lethal damage.

Upgrade Path

Lean harder into repeatable impulse-draw (Wild-Magic Sorcerer, Glorious Sunrise effects, Valakut Exploration) so Pia triggers every turn rather than occasionally. Add token doublers like Anointed Procession and Mondrak, Glory Dominus plus a couple of overrun finishers to convert the swarm into reliable kills. Round out with Boros ramp rocks (Arcane Signet, Boros Signet) and protection like Heroic Intervention to survive the board wipes your go-wide plan invites.
