Sam, Loyal Attendant
The Commander
Partner with Frodo, Adventurous Hobbit (When this creature enters, target player may put Frodo into their hand from their library, then shuffle.)
At the beginning of combat on your turn, create a Food token. (It's an artifact with ",
, Sacrifice this token: You gain 3 life.")
Activated abilities of Foods you control cost less to activate.
Guide
Gameplan
Sam churns out a Food token every combat and discounts Food activated abilities, fueling a GW Food-matters engine that grinds value, gains tons of life, and converts that lifegain or token volume into a win. You curve into Sam, start pumping Foods, and snowball with payoffs that reward sacrificing or accumulating artifacts.
Strengths
- Free, repeatable Food generation every turn with no mana investment
- Cost reduction makes Food and other artifact activations dramatically cheaper
- Resilient grindy value engine in GW's strong ramp/recursion shell
- Massive lifegain enables life-payoff and incidental defensive cushion
- Partner with Frodo gives consistency and an extra body/synergy piece
Weaknesses
- Lacks an inherent fast win—needs payoffs to close games
- Vulnerable to artifact wipes that strip your Food economy
- Lifegain alone is durdly and can be ignored by faster decks
- No native card draw or interaction baked into the commander
- Color pair offers limited disruption against combo
Key Cards
- Frodo, Adventurous Hobbit — Sam's Partner pairs naturally, adding a Food-and-counter synergy creature you can tutor on cast.
- Trail of Crumbs — Turns every Food sacrifice into card advantage, the premier Food card engine.
- Academy Manufactor — Each Food trigger also makes Clues and Treasures, exploding your artifact economy.
- Cauldron Familiar — With a Food loop it becomes a recurring drain that closes games.
- Witch's Oven — Pairs with Cauldron Familiar for the classic Cat-Oven sacrifice loop, cheaper under Sam.
- Gyome, Master Chef — Doubles down on Food production and rewards token generation across the board.
- Feasting Troll King — A free recursive beater fueled directly by your abundant Foods.
Upgrade Path
Add fast mana and tutors (Esper Sentinel-tier ramp, Green Sun's Zenith, Eladamri's Call) to assemble engines faster, and lean into a tight combo finish such as Cauldron Familiar + Witch's Oven + Mayhem Devil. Prioritize artifact-token multipliers (Academy Manufactor, Anointed Procession) and protect your engine with recursion and Heroic Intervention. Trim pure lifegain durdle for cards that directly translate Food into damage or card advantage.
