The Commander

Defender

Sokrates has hexproof as long as it's untapped.

Sokratic Dialogue — {T}: Until end of turn, target creature gains "If this creature would deal combat damage to a player, prevent that damage. This creature's controller and that player each draw half that many cards, rounded down."

Guide

Gameplan

Sokrates is a defensive UW value engine: park him behind a wall of blockers, then each turn tap him to convert a big attacker's combat damage into a fistful of cards for you and the damaged player. You build incremental card advantage and 'gift' damage prevention to grease political deals, then leverage your overwhelming card flow to land a control finisher or an alternate win. He's a turtle that out-resources the table rather than racing it.

Strengths

  • Hexproof while untapped makes him very hard to remove on the turns you don't activate him
  • Repeatable card advantage that scales with creature power, fueling a grindy long game
  • Defender plus damage-prevention text plays perfectly into pillow-fort and politics shells
  • Cheap to cast (3 MV) and can target opponents' attackers to make friends and deflect aggression
  • Two-color UW gives access to the best counters, wraths, and alternate win cards

Weaknesses

  • The draw ability requires a high-power creature to be meaningful, so it can be a dead engine early
  • Defender means he never pressures the board himself; the deck can stall out
  • Tapping for the ability strips his hexproof, opening a removal window
  • Vulnerable to graveyard-agnostic aggro that simply ignores the draw and goes wide
  • Symmetrical draw can refuel an opponent you target, and Drannith/stax disrupts the engine

Key Cards

  • Serra AvatarIts power equals your life total, turning a single Sokratic Dialogue activation into a massive card draw.
  • Stonecoil SerpentA scalable, protection-laden body whose huge power converts directly into cards each turn.
  • Thassa's OracleLets you cash in a near-empty library from explosive draws into an immediate win.
  • Approach of the Second SunA pure alternate win condition that your card-advantage engine can dig to and cast twice reliably.
  • PropagandaPillow-fort taxation keeps attackers off you while Sokrates grinds value behind his wall.
  • Teferi's ProtectionPhases you out to survive while leaning into a slow, inevitable game plan.

Upgrade Path

Add fast mana (Sol Ring, Arcane Signet, Mana Crystals) and protection like Teferi's Protection and Heroic Intervention to keep your engine online. Tighten the wincon by adding Laboratory Maniac/Jace, Wielder of Mysteries redundancy alongside Thassa's Oracle, plus tutors (Mystical Tutor, Fabricate) to find your high-power creature or finisher. Round out with stronger stax/pillow-fort pieces (Smothering Tithe, Ghostly Prison, Cyclonic Rift) so the slow defensive plan can't be punished by aggression.
