Svella, Ice Shaper
The Commander
,
: Create a colorless snow artifact token named Icy Manalith with "
: Add one mana of any color."
,
: Look at the top four cards of your library. You may cast a spell from among them without paying its mana cost. Put the rest on the bottom of your library in a random order.
Guide
Gameplan
Use Svella's first ability to spit out Icy Manalith mana rocks, ramping into huge threats and fixing colors well beyond what Gruul normally manages. Snowball that mana advantage until you can fire off the second ability to free-cast bombs, or simply hard-cast oversized creatures and X-spells to overwhelm the table. You play a midrange ramp game that wins by being bigger and resolving more powerful spells than anyone else.
Strengths
- Self-contained ramp and color fixing in a two-color deck, letting you splash effects or cast anything off Manaliths
- Snow synergies open powerful payoffs like Marit Lage and cost reducers
- Second ability provides repeatable free spells with enough mana, generating massive card and tempo advantage
- Tokens are artifacts and snow permanents, feeding multiple sub-themes
Weaknesses
- First ability is mana-intensive (
per token) and slow without ramp support
- Vulnerable to artifact wipes and mana-rock hate that wipe out your Manaliths
- Both abilities require Svella to survive and tap, so she's a removal magnet
- No card draw or interaction built in—Gruul's color pie limits answers
Key Cards
- Dramatic Reversal — Untaps all your Icy Manaliths for explosive bursts of mana, and with Isochron Scepter goes infinite.
- Marit Lage's Slumber — Snow permanents like Icy Manaliths count toward unlocking a 20/20 flying indestructible token.
- Doubling Cube — Doubles the colored mana your army of Manaliths produces for game-ending turns.
- Reki, the History of Kamigawa — Svella is legendary, so casting legends draws cards, patching Gruul's weakest stat.
- Kozilek, Butcher of Truth — A premier payoff to free-cast or ramp into, refilling your hand and providing inevitability.
- Heartbeat of Spring — Turns every Icy Manalith into two mana, supercharging both of Svella's abilities.
Upgrade Path
Add fast mana and untap enablers (Sol Ring, Mana Reflection, Dramatic Reversal + Isochron Scepter) to convert Manaliths into combo fuel rather than slow value. Prioritize cheap card draw and protection like Heroic Intervention and Greaves/Boots to keep Svella online, and lean harder into snow payoffs (Marit Lage's Slumber, Coldsteel Heart, snow basics) to add a second axis. Finish with high-impact free-cast targets—Eldrazi titans, Apex Devastator, or Craterhoof Behemoth—so each activation can end the game.

Win Conditions
- ▸Free-cast or hard-cast an Eldrazi titan or other game-ending bomb
- ▸Generate infinite/near-infinite mana with untap loops and pour it into an X-spell like Comet Storm or Banefire
- ▸Beat down with a 20/20 Marit Lage from Snow synergies
- ▸Overwhelm with oversized Gruul threats and trample finishers
Archetypes
- Big Mana Ramp — Svella manufactures rocks and fixing to cast the largest threats and X-spells in the game.
- Snow Synergy — Icy Manaliths are snow permanents that fuel payoffs like Marit Lage's Slumber and Dead of Winter.
- Combo — Mass mana plus untap effects (Dramatic Reversal, Doubling Cube) enable infinite-mana finishes.
- Spellslinger Cheat — The second ability repeatedly free-casts whatever bombs are on top of your library.
