The Cabbage Merchant
The Commander
Whenever an opponent casts a noncreature spell, create a Food token. (It's an artifact with ",
, Sacrifice this token: You gain 3 life.")
Whenever a creature deals combat damage to you, sacrifice a Food token.
Tap two untapped Foods you control: Add one mana of any color.
Guide
Gameplan
Generate a stockpile of Food tokens off your opponents' noncreature spells, then convert that hoard into mana ramp (tapping pairs of Foods for any color despite being mono-green) and a wide artifact engine. You win by leveraging massive Food production into Food-matters payoffs, big mana, and artifact synergies while gaining incidental life.
Strengths
- Passive, opponent-driven Food generation that snowballs in spell-heavy pods
- Effectively breaks your color identity—Food can tap for any color of mana
- Built-in lifegain and a buffer against early aggression
- Cheap, easy-to-cast 3-mana commander that ramps the whole table's interaction into your engine
Weaknesses
- Almost entirely reliant on opponents casting noncreature spells—does little in creature-heavy or low-interaction pods
- Mono-green means weak interaction and few sweepers/removal options
- Foods are fragile artifacts vulnerable to artifact wipes (Vandalblast, Bane of Progress)
- The combat-damage clause forces you to sacrifice your own Foods, draining your engine
- No inherent win condition—needs strong payoffs to actually close games
Key Cards
- Trail of Crumbs — Turns your endless Food supply into card advantage by digging for permanents every turn.
- Gyome, Master Chef — Doubles down on Food production and lets you sacrifice Foods to draw, a powerful engine partner.
- Academy Manufactor — Each Food trigger also makes a Clue and Treasure, tripling your artifact output and ramp.
- Cultivator Colossus — A massive payoff that converts excess lands and engine pieces into an enormous board and card draw.
- Ezuri's Predation — Mono-green needs board impact; this floods the field with bodies to fight creature decks.
- Craterhoof Behemoth — The classic mono-green finisher to turn a wide artifact/token board into lethal damage.
- Feasting Troll King — Free recursion from the graveyard fueled by sacrificing your abundant Food tokens.
Upgrade Path
Add more Food and artifact doublers (Academy Manufactor, Doubling Season) plus sacrifice engines (Ashnod's Altar, Trading Post) to make your hoard explosive and convertible. Lean into mono-green's strengths with fast mana (Sol Ring, Mana Crypt, Carpet of Flowers) and cheat huge payoffs via Cultivator Colossus and Craterhoof. Round out the deck's interaction gaps with green's best answers like Beast Within, Heroic Intervention, and Veil of Summer to protect your engine.
