Toph, Hardheaded Teacher
The Commander
When Toph enters, you may discard a card. If you do, return target instant or sorcery card from your graveyard to your hand.
Whenever you cast a spell, earthbend 1. If that spell is a Lesson, put an additional +1/+1 counter on that land. (Target land you control becomes a 0/0 creature with haste that's still a land. Put a +1/+1 counter on it. When it dies or is exiled, return it to the battlefield tapped.)
Guide
Gameplan
Toph turns your lands into a growing army via earthbend, pumping them every time you cast a spell while you sling instants/sorceries and Lessons for value. You ramp into Toph by turn 4, recur a key spell on ETB, then cast cheap spells each turn to build huge hasty land-creatures and swing for lethal. The earthbend death-trigger (lands return to the battlefield) makes your team resilient to board wipes.
Strengths
- Lands that die return to the battlefield, making your attackers extremely resilient to removal and wraths
- Casting cheap spells repeatedly snowballs land-creatures into massive haste threats
- ETB recursion gives card advantage and lets you reuse your best instant/sorcery
- Mono-creatureless-looking board dodges much targeted creature removal until lands are animated
Weaknesses
- Animating lands exposes your mana base to mass land destruction and edicts in awkward ways
- Heavily reliant on Toph being on the battlefield; without her, the deck loses its engine
- Vulnerable to creature board wipes once lands are animated mid-combat
- GR lacks strong interaction and card draw compared to other color pairs
- Lesson cards are a limited pool, so the Lesson upside is often marginal
Key Cards
- Burgeoning — Accelerates extra land drops so you have more bodies to earthbend and a faster mana base.
- Crucible of Worlds — Replays fetched and sacrificed lands, fueling a steady stream of earthbend targets.
- Underworld Breach — Recur cheap spells from the graveyard to trigger earthbend repeatedly in a single turn.
- Cathars' Crusade — Each spell-triggered earthbend stacks counters, but Crusade-style anthems make your land army snowball even harder.
- Goblin Bombardment — Sacrifices animated lands for damage, and they return to the battlefield, generating free recurring fuel.
- Blasphemous Act — A cheap mass removal spell that triggers earthbend while your returning lands survive the carnage.
Upgrade Path
Lower your curve with efficient cantrips (Opt, Mishra's Bauble, Crimson Wisp) to maximize earthbend triggers per turn, and add free or repeatable spell recursion like Underworld Breach and Past in Flames. Include payoffs such as Craterhoof Behemoth, Overwhelming Stampede, or a sacrifice outlet to convert your wide land board into a kill. Protect Toph with cheap haste and recast value (Lightning Greaves, Heroic Intervention) since the deck collapses without her engine online.

Win Conditions
- ▸Swing with a wide team of buffed haste land-creatures for combat damage
- ▸Sacrifice loops with Goblin Bombardment-style outlets fueled by returning lands
- ▸Recurring big X-spells or burn via Underworld Breach for direct damage
- ▸Overrun-style anthem effects turning the land army lethal in one attack
Archetypes
- Spellslinger — Every instant and sorcery triggers earthbend, rewarding a low-curve cantrip-heavy build.
- Lands — Animated lands as creatures plus earthbend's recursion make a lands-matter shell natural.
- Aggro/Beatdown — Hasty, ever-growing land-creatures provide a fast, resilient attacking board.
- Sacrifice value — Lands return when they die, enabling repeatable sacrifice loops for damage or value.
