Torgal, A Fine Hound
The Commander
Whenever you cast your first Human creature spell each turn, that creature enters with an additional +1/+1 counter on it for each Dog and/or Wolf you control.
: Add one mana of any color.
Guide
Gameplan
Build a wide board of Dogs and Wolves, then cast Human creatures that enter loaded with +1/+1 counters scaling off your pack. Use Torgal's mana ability to ramp into colored splashes or big spells, and convert the counters into combat damage or counter-matters payoffs. You're a green creatures-matter deck that snowballs board size every turn.
Strengths
- Torgal taps for any color, giving mono-green access to off-color spells and ramp on turn 2.
- Free +1/+1 counters on Human creatures scale hard once you flood the board with Dogs and Wolves.
- Low mana value (2) makes it cheap to recast after removal.
- Plays well in both go-wide tokens and counters-synergy shells.
Weaknesses
- Counter bonus only triggers on your FIRST Human spell each turn, capping the engine.
- Needs a critical mass of Dogs/Wolves on board before the ability does much.
- Mono-green struggles with interaction, spot removal, and reaching the air.
- Board wipes reset both the pack and the counter payoff, collapsing the strategy.
- Relies on Torgal staying alive to fuel mana and trigger value.
Key Cards
- Pack Leader — Cheap Dog lord that grows your pack count and pumps the team.
- Voja, Jaws of the Conclave — A Wolf that draws cards and makes counters based on your Humans, perfectly mirroring Torgal's tribes.
- Hardened Scales — Doubles the counter payoff every time a Human enters.
- Wolfir Avenger — Efficient Wolf body that adds to your pack count for Torgal's trigger.
- Cabaretti Courtyard — Cheap way to fetch lands; pairs with Torgal's any-color mana to fix splashes.
- Inspiring Call — Card draw and protection that scales with your counter-laden board.
Upgrade Path
Add counter doublers (Doubling Season, Branching Evolution) and proliferate effects to multiply Torgal's payoff, plus a Craterhoof Behemoth or Triumph of the Hordes finisher. Improve consistency with token generators that make Dogs/Wolves and reliable green ramp (Sakura-Tribe Elder, Wild Growth) to fuel Torgal's mana. Lean into protection like Heroic Intervention and Inspiring Call so a single board wipe doesn't end your game.
