Treebeard, Gracious Host
The Commander
Trample, ward
When Treebeard enters, create two Food tokens.
Whenever you gain life, put that many +1/+1 counters on target Halfling or Treefolk.
Guide
Gameplan
Treebeard is a GW lifegain-counters payoff: you ramp into him, generate steady lifegain triggers, and funnel that life into +1/+1 counters to grow a trampling threat that closes fast. Each turn you want to be gaining life from Food, lifelink, or incremental triggers, then dumping counters onto Treebeard or another Treefolk/Halfling to swing for lethal commander damage. Early turns build mana and lifegain engines; mid-game you stack counters and start connecting through trample and ward.
Strengths
- Color identity gives access to elite ramp, lifegain, and counter synergies
- Trample plus stacked counters makes him a fast, hard-to-chump commander-damage clock
- Ward
protects your investment from cheap removal
- Food and lifegain payoffs double as both defense and offense
- Counters can target other Treefolk/Halflings for redundancy and go-wide threats
Weaknesses
- Counters live on creatures, so board wipes and exile removal set you back hard
- Needs lifegain engines online or his ability does nothing
- Narrow tribal synergy (Treefolk/Halfling) limits counter targets in a vacuum
- GW lacks card draw and interaction compared to other color pairs
- Single-target counter clock can be raced by faster combo decks
Key Cards
- Soul Warden — Turns every creature entering into a lifegain trigger, fueling counters constantly.
- Trelasarra, Moon Dancer — Another lifegain-to-counters payoff and a Halfling target that snowballs alongside Treebeard.
- Heliod, Sun-Crowned — Adds extra lifegain triggers and grants lifelink, supercharging Treebeard's counter ability.
- Cathars' Crusade — Stacks even more counters every time creatures enter, accelerating a wide counter strategy.
- The Ozolith — Banks Treebeard's counters so a wipe doesn't erase your progress.
- Archangel of Thune — Lifegain pumps your whole board while Treebeard adds targeted counters for explosive turns.
Upgrade Path
Add explosive lifegain payoffs like Heliod, Sun-Crowned and Archangel of Thune plus repeatable triggers (Soul Warden effects, Cleric Class) to maximize counter output. Protect your investment with The Ozolith, Heroic Intervention, and counter-doublers like Hardened Scales and Branching Evolution. Round it out with proliferate (Inexorable Tide, Evolution Sage) and an Overrun-style finisher to convert counters into a one-shot kill.

Archetypes

- Voltron — Trample and ward
make a counter-loaded Treebeard a lethal commander-damage threat.
- Treefolk/Halfling Tribal — He buffs the tribes directly and benefits from go-wide token and tribal payoffs.
