Ureni of the Unwritten
The Commander
Flying, trample
Whenever Ureni enters or attacks, look at the top eight cards of your library. You may put a Dragon creature card from among them onto the battlefield. Put the rest on the bottom of your library in a random order.
Guide
Gameplan
Ramp into Ureni by turn 5-6, then abuse its enter/attack trigger to cheat huge Dragons onto the battlefield from your top eight cards. Build a wide, fat Dragon board and close games with evasive flying beaters while the trigger snowballs you ahead on tempo and card advantage.
Strengths
- Free Dragons every turn from a single attack trigger generate massive tempo and card advantage
- Comes online quickly — flying/trample 6/6 body that immediately cheats out a threat on ETB
- Temur colors give the best ramp, card draw, and removal in the format
- Heavy payoff for the popular and well-supported Dragon tribe
Weaknesses
- High variance — the trigger whiffs if you have few Dragons or draw the wrong eight cards
- Reliant on Ureni resolving and surviving; it's a removal magnet and gets worse with each recast tax
- No built-in protection or evasion buff for the rest of the board
- Three-color mana base plus expensive Dragons can lead to clunky, color-screwed hands
Key Cards
- Dragon Tempest — Turns every Dragon that enters off Ureni's trigger into immediate damage and grants haste so cheated-in fliers attack right away.
- Scourge of Valkas — Each entering Dragon pings for damage equal to your Dragon count, converting Ureni's free Dragons into a burn win condition.
- Temur Ascendancy — Gives all your Dragons haste so cheated-out creatures attack immediately, and draws a card whenever one enters.
- Utvara Hellkite — Spawns a 6/6 Dragon for every Dragon that attacks, creating an explosive board with Ureni's go-wide tribe.
- Lathliss, Dragon Queen — Punishes opponents and floods the board with tokens as your Dragons enter, amplifying Ureni's value engine.
- Cultivate — Fixes the demanding three-color mana base and ramps toward casting Ureni and its huge Dragon payload on curve.
Upgrade Path
Tighten the curve and raise your Dragon count so the trigger rarely whiffs, then add haste enablers (Temur Ascendancy, Crucible of Fire) and enter-the-battlefield damage payoffs (Terror of the Peaks, Balefire Dragon) to convert cheated Dragons into immediate wins. Improve the mana base with fast rocks (Arcane Signet, fetch/dual lands) and protect Ureni via Heroic Intervention, Lightning Greaves, or Deflecting Swat. For higher power, lean into reanimator/cheat shells with Ancient Copper Dragon, Old Gnawbone, and Dragonlord Atarka to maximize each free-cast.
