Maelstrom Wanderer
The Commander
Creatures you control have haste.
Cascade, cascade (When you cast this spell, exile cards from the top of your library until you exile a nonland card that costs less. You may cast it without paying its mana cost. Put the exiled cards on the bottom in a random order. Then do it again.)
Guide
Gameplan
Ramp hard into Maelstrom Wanderer, trigger double cascade for two free spells on cast, then leverage haste to immediately attack or activate everything. From there you chain big impactful spells, cheat threats into play, and snowball card and mana advantage until you overwhelm the table.
Strengths
- Two free spells every time you cast it, generating massive value even if it's removed
- Grants all your creatures haste, enabling immediate attacks and tap-activated bombs
- Temur's deep ramp and card advantage support a high curve
- Pairs perfectly with cascade and free-spell payoffs
Weaknesses
- 8-mana commander makes early game slow and ramp-dependent
- High variance from cascade hitting low-value spells
- Vulnerable to removal that turns your big investment into a tempo loss
- No built-in protection or evasion on the commander itself
Key Cards
- Etali, Primal Storm — Haste plus a free cast off each opponent's library snowballs into game-ending value.
- Apex Devastator — Quadruple cascade with haste is an absurd value engine that wins on the spot.
- Cyclonic Rift — Premier blue board wipe to reset the table and let your hasty threats close.
- Temur Sabertooth — Protects key creatures and enables ETB loops while everything attacks unimpeded.
- Craterhoof Behemoth — With haste granted, it immediately ends games out of a developed board.
Upgrade Path
Lean into proven free-cast and cascade payoffs (Apex Devastator, Etali, Maelstrom Nexus) and tighten the ramp suite with fast mana like Mana Crypt, Jeweled Lotus, and signets to deploy Wanderer ahead of curve. Add resilient finishers and protection (Heroic Intervention, Lightning Greaves) so a single board wipe or removal spell doesn't undo your investment. For higher power, include a compact combo line such as Food Chain shenanigans or infinite-mana payoffs to convert your value engine into a fast kill.
