Wulfgar of Icewind Dale
The Commander
Melee (Whenever this creature attacks, it gets +1/+1 until end of turn for each opponent you attacked this combat.)
If a creature you control attacking causes a triggered ability of a permanent you control to trigger, that ability triggers an additional time.
Guide
Gameplan
Wulfgar turns combat into a snowball: every attack trigger from your creatures (and permanents) fires twice, so you flood the board, swing wide at multiple opponents, and convert attack triggers into overwhelming value or lethal damage. Ramp into Wulfgar by turn 4-5, deploy attack-trigger creatures, then alpha strike into all three opponents to maximize Melee and doubled triggers.
Strengths
- Doubles ALL attack-trigger abilities, not just combat damage, creating explosive value engines
- Melee rewards multiplayer attacking, making Wulfgar himself a fast clock and Voltron threat
- Gruul colors give cheap ramp and aggressive bodies to enable early attacks
- Synergizes with a huge pool of attack-trigger creatures and permanents for redundancy
Weaknesses
- Relies on attacking, so Fog effects, mass blockers, and Propaganda-style stax cripple the plan
- No built-in evasion or protection for Wulfgar himself; easily blocked or removed
- Doubling triggers only matters if you draw attack-trigger payloads—can fizzle into a vanilla beatdown deck
- GR lacks card draw and interaction, so flooding out or getting hated off the board hurts
Key Cards
- Hellrider — Each attacking creature deals a damage trigger that Wulfgar doubles, turning a wide board into a burn wincon.
- Combat Celebrant — Its exert grants an extra combat, and combined with Wulfgar's doubling you can chain multiple attack steps.
- Aurelia, the Warleader—style extra combats — Repeated combat phases multiply Melee bonuses and every doubled attack trigger for explosive lethal turns.
- Moraug, Fury of Akoum — Landfall grants extra combats and Moraug's own attack triggers get doubled, enabling absurd one-turn kills.
- Kalain, Reclusive Painter — Treasure-on-attack doubles into a ramp/token engine that fuels your bigger threats.
- Marshal's Anthem / token makers — Attack-triggered token creation doubled by Wulfgar floods the board for repeated Melee swings.
Upgrade Path
Lean into extra-combat enablers (Aggravated Assault, Moraug, Combat Celebrant) and reliable evasion (Rogue's Passage, trample/flying) so Wulfgar's doubling translates into guaranteed lethal turns. Add the best Gruul ramp (Sol Ring, Signets, Birds, Cultivate) to power him out early and pack targeted protection like Heroic Intervention and Lightning Greaves. Trim vanilla beaters for more on-attack payoff permanents to maximize the trigger-doubling identity.

Win Conditions
- ▸Commander damage from a pumped, evasive Wulfgar via Melee
- ▸Hellrider/Pathbreaker-style doubled attack-damage triggers burning out the table
- ▸Extra-combat loops (Moraug, Combat Celebrant, Aggravated Assault) for one-shot kills
- ▸Going wide with doubled token generation and an overrun/anthem effect
Archetypes
- Aggro/Voltron — Melee plus pump and evasion turns Wulfgar into a commander-damage threat that scales with opponents.
- Go-Wide Tokens — Doubled attack-trigger token and damage payoffs overwhelm the table in combat.
- Combo (Extra Combats) — Doubling extra-combat and landfall triggers chains attack steps into lethal loops.
- Attack-Trigger Value — Stacking creatures with on-attack abilities generates twice the ramp, draw, and damage each swing.
