Zegana, Utopian Speaker
The Commander
When Zegana enters, if you control another creature with a +1/+1 counter on it, draw a card.
: Adapt 4. (If this creature has no +1/+1 counters on it, put four +1/+1 counters on it.)
Each creature you control with a +1/+1 counter on it has trample.
Guide
Gameplan
Zegana, Utopian Speaker anchors a Simic +1/+1 counters deck that grows a wide board of creatures and pushes lethal trample damage through blockers. Early turns develop counter-generating creatures and ramp, then Zegana arrives drawing a card and turning every counter creature into a trampler. Mid-game you snowball with proliferate and counter doublers, and close by swinging out with oversized, unblockable-in-practice attackers.
Strengths
- Free card draw on entry and a built-in mana sink via Adapt 4
- Granting trample to your whole counter-based board makes blocking nearly useless
- Simic offers the format's best ramp, card advantage, and counter synergies
- Resilient, go-wide-and-tall strategy that grinds well in multiplayer
Weaknesses
- Board wipes can devastate the counter-creature base in one card
- Relies on having other counter creatures to maximize Zegana's draw and trample anthem
- No built-in evasion beyond trample, so fliers and high-toughness walls slow you down
- Lacks interaction in the command zone; main deck must supply removal and protection
Key Cards
- Hardened Scales — Multiplies every counter you place, accelerating your whole board including Zegana's Adapt.
- Branching Evolution — Doubles counters added, turning modest creatures into trample threats overnight.
- Inkmoth Nexus — A counter-friendly creature land that, with trample, threatens infect/poison kills.
- Hadana's Climb — Proliferates each combat and flips into a powerful counter-doubling enchantment.
- Doubling Season — Doubles all +1/+1 counters entering, supercharging Adapt and counter creatures.
- Evolution Sage — Proliferates every land drop, steadily pumping your whole trampling team.
- Simic Ascendancy — Counters give you wins via its alternate-win counter accumulation.
Upgrade Path
Tighten the counter package with doublers (Doubling Season, Branching Evolution, Hardened Scales) and proliferate enablers (Evolution Sage, Flux Channeler) to snowball faster. Add protection like Heroic Intervention and Tyvar's Stand to survive board wipes, plus efficient ramp (Sol Ring, Cultivate, mana dorks) and card-advantage engines like Beast Whisperer. For higher power, lean into Inkmoth/Blinkmoth infect lines or a tutorable combo finish to close before opponents stabilize.
