Adéwalé, Breaker of Chains
The Commander
When Adéwalé enters, reveal the top six cards of your library. Put an Assassin, Pirate, or Vehicle card from among them into your hand and the rest on the bottom of your library in a random order.
Whenever a Vehicle you control deals combat damage to a player, you may return this card from your graveyard to your hand.
Guide
Gameplan
Adéwalé is a tribal value engine for Pirates, Assassins, and Vehicles in Dimir colors. Each cast digs six cards deep for a creature or Vehicle, and his recursion clause means you can sacrifice or block away with him freely as long as a Vehicle connects. Grind incremental advantage with evasive crew, then close with go-wide tribal beats or a few oversized Vehicles.
Strengths
- Built-in card advantage every time he enters or returns, keeping your hand stocked
- Self-recursion from the graveyard makes him nearly impossible to keep down
- Pirates and Assassins both offer strong evasion and disruption in U/B
- Flexible tribal shells let you tune toward aggro, value, or stax
Weaknesses
- The ETB only finds tribal cards, so a flooded board of lands/spells whiffs hard
- Vehicle decks are crew-dependent and stumble when creatures get swept
- Lacks a fast combo finish; can be ground out by faster decks
- No inherent ramp or big mana in the color identity
Key Cards
- Smuggler's Copter — Cheap, evasive Vehicle that loots and triggers Adéwalé's recursion easily.
- Coastal Piracy — Turns your evasive Pirates into a relentless card-draw engine.
- Admiral Beckett Brass — Anthem and steal effect that rewards a wide Pirate board.
- Skullclamp — Converts cheap tribal tokens and dying crew into a steady card stream.
- Parhelion II — A bomb Vehicle payoff that ends games and reliably brings Adéwalé back.
Upgrade Path
Add efficient interaction (Counterspell, Fatal Push, Cyclonic Rift) and better card velocity to smooth the tribal hits. Lean into Vehicles with cheap crewers and standout cars, and include a backup combo or alpha-strike enabler like Coat of Arms or Door of Destinies to convert your board into faster kills.

- Vehicles — His recursion trigger and ETB tutoring directly support a Vehicle-centric build.
- Value Midrange — Repeatable card advantage and graveyard recursion grind opponents out.
