Aragorn and Arwen, Wed
The Commander
Whenever Aragorn and Arwen enters or attacks, put a +1/+1 counter on each other creature you control. You gain 1 life for each other creature you control.
Guide
Gameplan
Flood the board with creatures, then deploy Aragorn and Arwen to anthem your team with permanent +1/+1 counters and a big lifegain swing every combat. Each attack snowballs your board wider and taller while keeping your life total out of reach. You win by going wide with counter-boosted attackers that quickly outgrow any defense.
Strengths
- Vigilance plus an attack trigger means you grow your board AND keep blockers up every turn
- Scales explosively with token strategies — more creatures means more counters and more life
- Counters are permanent and stack with counter-synergy payoffs
- Massive incidental lifegain stabilizes against aggro and burn
- GW has the best go-wide and counter support in the format
Weaknesses
- Six mana and dies to a single removal spell, resetting the engine
- Board wipes are devastating since the deck overcommits to the battlefield
- Triggers do nothing for the commander itself (the buff is 'each other creature')
- No evasion built in — wide boards can be walled by go-tall or flyers
- Slow to come online compared to dedicated combo decks
Key Cards
- Cathars' Crusade — Doubles down on counter generation, turning every creature you cast into a massive team-wide pump.
- Hardened Scales — Amplifies every +1/+1 counter the commander distributes for cheap.
- Doubling Season — Doubles both the counters placed and any tokens you make, supercharging the whole engine.
- Craterhoof Behemoth — Converts your wide, counter-pumped board into a one-shot lethal alpha strike.
- Skullclamp — Turns excess tokens into card advantage to refuel after wipes and keep bodies coming.
- Esper Sentinel — Cheap creature that draws cards and counts toward your creature total for triggers.
Upgrade Path
Add counter doublers (Doubling Season, Branching Evolution, Hardened Scales) and token producers to make each trigger exponential, plus protection like Heroic Intervention and Teferi's Protection to survive wipes. Tighten the curve with cheap mana dorks and efficient creatures so the commander lands earlier, and include a hard finisher (Craterhoof, Triumph of the Hordes) to close before opponents stabilize. For higher power, lean into a fast mana base and recursion like Eternal Witness to rebuild after removal.

Win Conditions
- ▸Overrun effect like Craterhoof Behemoth or Overwhelming Stampede for lethal alpha strike
- ▸Grinding out incremental damage with an ever-growing counter-buffed board
- ▸Lifegain payoffs such as Aetherflux Reservoir or Felidar Sovereign
- ▸Wide-board combat damage outscaling all opponents' defenses
Archetypes
- Tokens — Every creature gets a counter and adds life, so flooding the board with tokens maximizes both triggers.
- +1/+1 Counters — The commander is a repeatable team-wide counter engine that pairs with counter doublers and payoffs.
- Go-Wide Aggro — Vigilance and recurring anthems let you attack profitably while keeping a defensive wall.
- Lifegain — Gaining life equal to your creature count enables lifegain payoffs alongside the aggressive plan.
