Beledros Witherbloom
The Commander
Flying
At the beginning of each upkeep, create a 1/1 black and green Pest creature token with "When this token dies, you gain 1 life."
Pay 10 life: Untap all lands you control. Activate only once each turn.
Guide
Gameplan
Beledros pumps out a Pest token every upkeep (yours and opponents') while letting you pay 10 life to untap all your lands for a massive mana burst. You leverage life total as a resource, converting pests and life into board presence, card advantage, and lethal drains. The deck typically wants to ramp into Beledros, then chain land-untaps with big mana payoffs to overwhelm or combo off.
Strengths
- Generates a steady stream of tokens passively, fueling aristocrats and token payoffs
- Treats life as a renewable resource via lifegain pests and the untap ability
- Can produce explosive mana for X-spells, big payoffs, and infinite combos
- Black and green offer premier ramp, recursion, and removal
Weaknesses
- Seven mana commander that does little the turn it lands and demands ramp to lead into
- Paying 10 life repeatedly is dangerous against aggro and burn
- Heavily reliant on the commander itself, so removal-heavy tables slow you down
- No evasion or protection beyond flying, making it easy to chump-block or kill
Key Cards
- Blood Artist — Turns the endless stream of dying pests into incremental drain that closes games.
- Pitiless Plunderer — Each dying pest makes Treasure, fueling explosive mana alongside the untap ability.
- Ashnod's Altar — Sacrifices pests for mana and combos with token generation and life payoffs.
- Exquisite Blood — Pairs with lifegain payoffs and pings for life-loss combo finishes.
- Sanguine Bond — Combos with Exquisite Blood for an instant-win loop powered by any life gain.
- Cabal Coffers — With Beledros's untap, generates absurd black mana to fuel X-spells and drains.
- Witherbloom Apprentice — Punishes opponents whenever you gain life from pests, providing reach.
Upgrade Path
Add fast mana and ramp (Sol Ring, Arcane Signet, big-mana lands like Cabal Coffers and Nykthos) so you cast Beledros early and abuse the untap ability. Tighten combo lines with Sanguine Bond/Exquisite Blood and a token doubler such as Anointed Procession, plus efficient tutors (Vampiric Tutor, Demonic Tutor) to assemble pieces. Round out with cheap interaction and lifegain payoffs like Aetherflux Reservoir to convert your life-as-resource engine into reliable wins.
