The Commander

Mutate {2}{U/B}{G}{G} (If you cast this spell for its mutate cost, put it over or under target non-Human creature you own. They mutate into the creature on top plus all abilities from under it.)

Trample

You may cast this card from your graveyard using its mutate ability.

Guide

Gameplan

Brokkos is a recursive mutate engine: you stack value creatures (mutators) under a host to build a giant trampling threat that accrues triggered abilities and ETB-style mutate triggers. Because Brokkos can be cast from the graveyard via mutate repeatedly, you never truly lose your commander to removal, letting you grind out card advantage and beat down. Win by snowballing one or two enormous mutate piles that crash through for lethal trample damage.

Strengths

  • Extreme resilience—Brokkos returns from the graveyard for {2}{U/B}{G}{G}, dodging the command tax and most removal
  • Mutate stacks abilities, turning a single creature into a multi-ability value engine
  • Sultai colors give access to ramp, recursion, card draw, and the best mutate payoffs
  • Trample makes piled-up power hard to chump-block

Weaknesses

  • Board wipes and especially exile-based removal can blow out an over-invested mutate pile in one card
  • Heavily reliant on a single creature carrying all your value—'all eggs in one basket'
  • Mutate triggers are slow and grindy; can be outpaced by dedicated combo decks
  • Vulnerable to graveyard hate cutting off Brokkos recursion and reanimation

Key Cards

  • Sawtusk DemolisherMutate trigger lets you repeatedly destroy noncreature permanents each time you re-cast Brokkos onto a pile.
  • Vadrok, Apex of ThunderOutside color identity—skip; instead lean on Brokkos's own recursion as the engine.
  • GemrazerReach and trample plus a mutate trigger that destroys artifacts/enchantments for repeatable removal.
  • Cavern of SoulsProtects your mutate casts (Brokkos is a Nightmare/Beast/Elemental) from counterspells.
  • Lurking PredatorsTurns your big-creature density into a snowballing free-creature engine.
  • Otrimi, the Ever-PlayfulA second commander-quality mutate host that tutors back mutate creatures on combat damage.

Upgrade Path

Tighten the mana base with Sultai duals, fetches, and fast mana like Sol Ring and Three Visits, and add protection (Lightning Greaves, Heroic Intervention) to keep your pile alive through wipes. Lean into the best mutate creatures (Sawtusk Demolisher, Gemrazer, Auspicious Starrix, Migratory Greathorn) and recursion like Eternal Witness and Genesis to make graveyard hate less crippling. For higher power, pivot toward a more focused threat with counter synergies (Hardened Scales) or a tutor-supported value engine that closes faster than pure beatdown.

Win Conditions

  • Smash through with an oversized trampling Brokkos mutate pile, including commander damage
  • Repeatedly recur Brokkos to grind out value and removal advantage until the board is yours
  • Combo finish with mutate triggers (e.g. repeatable destruction) plus a big-mana payoff or counters package

Archetypes

  • Mutate MidrangeBrokkos is the format's premier mutate host, building resilient value piles that grind opponents out.
  • VoltronA single mutate pile with trample and pump can carry commander damage and general beatdown.
  • Graveyard Value/ReanimatorSelf-recursion plus Sultai reanimation lets you reuse creatures and rebuild after wipes.
  • +1/+1 CountersSultai supports counter synergies that scale the mutate stack into a lethal threat fast.
