King Darien XLVIII
The Commander
Other creatures you control get +1/+1.
: Put a +1/+1 counter on King Darien and create a 1/1 white Soldier creature token.
Sacrifice King Darien: Creature tokens you control gain hexproof and indestructible until end of turn.
Guide
Gameplan
King Darien XLVIII anchors a GW go-wide tokens deck: flood the board with creature tokens, pump them all with his static +1/+1 (and a counters/anthem package), then swing for lethal. His activated ability grows your army each turn, and his sacrifice ability protects your tokens from a single board wipe or removal-based blowout.
Strengths
- Cheap 3-mana anthem that immediately buffs every other creature you control
- Built-in mana sink that makes tokens and grows itself in the late game
- Sacrifice ability gives your whole token army hexproof and indestructible, dodging wraths and targeted removal
- GW has excellent token, anthem, and protection support at all budgets
- Resilient board state that rebuilds quickly thanks to token generation
Weaknesses
- Anthem only buffs OTHER creatures, so Darien himself stays vulnerable until pumped
- Relies heavily on the battlefield—non-token sweepers, edicts, and exile effects still hurt
- Sacrificing Darien removes the +1/+1 anthem, often a big tempo loss
- Lacks card draw and ramp in-color without dedicated slots
- Vulnerable to fast combo decks since the go-wide plan needs time to assemble
Key Cards
- Intangible Virtue — Stacks a second anthem specifically on your token army for explosive go-wide damage.
- Anointed Procession — Doubles every token you make, including Darien's activated Soldiers, snowballing your board.
- Skullclamp — Turns your steady supply of 1/1 tokens into a relentless card-draw engine.
- Cathars' Crusade — Piles +1/+1 counters on your whole team every time a token enters, ending games fast.
- Craterhoof Behemoth — Converts a wide board into immediate lethal, the classic tokens finisher.
- Heroic Intervention — A backup protection spell that complements Darien's sacrifice ability against wraths.
Upgrade Path
Add efficient ramp and card draw (Smothering Tithe, Esper Sentinel, Welcoming Vampire) so you aren't reliant on chump tokens for resources. Layer in token doublers (Anointed Procession, Doubling Season) and a hard finisher like Craterhoof Behemoth or Overwhelming Stampede to close before slower decks combo off. Tighten protection with Teferi's Protection and Heroic Intervention to make the board near-immortal.
