Skullbriar, the Walking Grave

Mana value2EDHREC#8,429

The Commander

Haste

Whenever Skullbriar deals combat damage to a player, put a +1/+1 counter on it.

Counters remain on Skullbriar as it moves to any zone other than a player's hand or library.

Guide

Gameplan

Skullbriar is a two-mana voltron beatstick that grows itself off combat damage and, crucially, keeps its counters when it dies or is exiled, so removal barely slows you down. Deploy Skullbriar turn 2-3, pile on +1/+1 counters and evasion, and kill players one at a time with commander damage. Recast it cheaply after wipes since its size is preserved and you avoid heavy commander tax punishment.

Strengths

  • Counters persist through death, exile, and graveyard, making the deck extremely resilient to spot removal and board wipes
  • Cheap two-mana commander with haste lets you start the clock early and recast affordably
  • Closes games fast via 21 commander damage, often killing a player in 2-3 swings
  • Golgari colors give access to the best ramp, recursion, and protection in the format

Weaknesses

  • Relies on a single creature, so tuck effects, -X/-X, and edicts (when it's your only creature) hit hard
  • No built-in evasion beyond haste; gets chump-blocked without trample or unblockable
  • Voltron strategies attract removal and struggle into pillowfort and fog decks
  • Lower base power than a wide or combo deck if Skullbriar is repeatedly answered with non-destroy removal like Imprisoned in the Moon

Key Cards

  • RancorTrample plus repeatable buff that returns to hand when Skullbriar dies, perfect for pushing through commander damage.
  • Hydra's GrowthDoubles Skullbriar's counters each combat for explosive, exponential growth.
  • Swiftfoot BootsHexproof and shroud protection keeps your only threat safe from targeted removal.
  • Corpse DanceCheaply reanimates Skullbriar with haste while its counters persist, dodging commander tax after a wipe.
  • The OzolithCatches counters if Skullbriar somehow leaves and moves them back, though Skullbriar already keeps most—great backup with other counter creatures.
  • Greater GoodCard advantage engine and a sacrifice outlet to safely cycle Skullbriar through the graveyard.

Upgrade Path

Add cheap protection (Heroic Intervention, Snakeskin Veil, Lightning Greaves) and reliable evasion (trample/unblockable like Slip Through Space or Rogue's Passage) so swings always connect. Lean into counter doublers and proliferate plus low-cost reanimation (Corpse Dance, Reanimate) to recover instantly from removal. Tighten the mana with fast ramp (Sol Ring, signets, Three Visits) to land Skullbriar and a buff in the same turn for an aggressive early clock.
