Trostani, Selesnya's Voice
The Commander
Whenever another creature you control enters, you gain life equal to that creature's toughness.
,
: Populate. (Create a token that's a copy of a creature token you control.)
Guide
Gameplan
Flood the board with creatures and tokens, gaining huge chunks of life with every creature that enters while Trostani's populate ability copies your best token over and over. You build an overwhelming wide board and grind opponents out with value, then close with an anthem or a single big payoff. The deck is naturally resilient, leaning on incremental advantage and lifegain to weather aggression.
Strengths
- Generates massive incidental lifegain that buys time against aggro and burn
- Populate snowballs powerful token copies for repeatable value
- Goes very wide, enabling overrun-style finishes and convoke
- Resilient board presence that rebuilds quickly after wraths
Weaknesses
- Two-color GW lacks card draw and interaction, especially countermagic
- Lifegain alone doesn't win and can be a 'do-nothing' if not converted to pressure
- Heavily reliant on having a strong token to populate; weak without setup
- Vulnerable to board wipes and graveyard-light recovery if overcommitted
Key Cards
- Tendershoot Dryad — Pumps out Saproling tokens every upkeep and becomes a giant anthem with ascend, fueling populate and lifegain.
- Doubling Season — Doubles token production and makes every populate and creature ETB twice as explosive.
- Cathars' Crusade — Turns Trostani's wide token swarm into an exponentially growing army with every creature that enters.
- Trostani Discordant — Provides an anthem, an immediate token army, and synergizes with the go-wide lifegain plan.
- Craterhoof Behemoth — The classic finisher that converts your massive token board into lethal damage in one swing.
- Anointed Procession — Another token doubler that supercharges populate and the entire token engine.
Upgrade Path
Add token doublers (Doubling Season, Parallel Lives, Anointed Procession) and strong tokens worth populating like Ophiomancer or Avenger of Zendikar to maximize the engine. Shore up GW's weaknesses with ramp (Smothering Tithe, Sol Ring, Cultivate) and card advantage (Beast Whisperer, Guardian Project, Esper Sentinel). For higher power, lean into a fast Craterhoof finish or a lifegain combo like Aetherflux Reservoir, and include protection such as Heroic Intervention and Teferi's Protection.
