Vorel of the Hull Clade

Mana value3EDHREC#3,113

The Commander

{G}{U}, {T}: Double the number of each kind of counter on target artifact, creature, or land.

Guide

Gameplan

Vorel doubles counters on artifacts, creatures, or lands, so you build a board that wants counters and then exponentially explode them. Ramp out Vorel, find a key target (a +1/+1 counter creature, a charge-counter artifact, or a planeswalker proxy), and double until you generate game-ending value or mana. You win by snowballing counters into oversized threats or infinite mana/combo loops.

Strengths

  • Exponential scaling: doubling counters every turn quickly produces unbeatable boards
  • Extremely flexible target pool—creatures, artifacts (mana rocks, Astral Cornucopia), and lands
  • Simul/Simic colors give the best ramp and card draw in the format
  • Cheap commander (3 MV) that's easy to recast

Weaknesses

  • Vorel is a fragile, slow engine that gets answered by removal before it pays off
  • Activated ability requires tapping and surviving a turn, so it's reactive
  • Doubling zero counters does nothing—you need enablers on board first
  • GU lacks efficient interaction and struggles vs. fast combo or heavy stax

Key Cards

  • Astral CornucopiaCharge counters double with Vorel for explosive, color-flexible ramp.
  • Doubling SeasonStacks with Vorel so counters quadruple, and supercharges any token/counter payoff.
  • Gyre SageEvolve grows it, then Vorel doubles its counters for massive ramp via its tap ability.
  • Inexorable TideProliferate every spell turns Vorel's doubled counters into a runaway engine.
  • Walking BallistaDouble its +1/+1 counters and ping the table to death as a clean win condition.
  • Forgotten AncientAccumulates +1/+1 counters off every spell, giving Vorel a huge target to double.

Upgrade Path

Add fast mana (Sol Ring, Mana Crypt, Simic Signet) so Vorel comes down early and survives to activate, and protect him with Heroic Intervention, Lightning Greaves, and Swiftfoot Boots. Lean into a tight combo finish—Walking Ballista plus mana doublers like Gilded Lotus and Astral Cornucopia—rather than a slow battlecruiser plan. Round out with proliferate engines (Inexorable Tide, Evolution Sage) and counterspells like Swan Song and Fierce Guardianship to defend the engine.
