Jolrael, Mwonvuli Recluse
The Commander
Whenever you draw your second card each turn, create a 2/2 green Cat creature token.
: Until end of turn, creatures you control have base power and toughness X/X, where X is the number of cards in your hand.
Guide
Gameplan
Jolrael turns extra card draw into a flood of 2/2 Cats, building a wide green board while keeping a full grip. You spend the early game ramping and deploying cheap card-advantage engines that trigger your second draw each turn, then close with the overrun-style activation that pumps your whole team to X/X equal to your hand size.
Strengths
- Token generation triggered by a low bar — just your second draw each turn
- Built-in finisher that scales with hand size for explosive, often lethal alpha strikes
- Cheap two-mana commander that comes down early and snowballs
- Mono-green consistency with easy ramp and resilient board presence
Weaknesses
- Heavily reliant on the commander staying on the battlefield to make Cats
- Board wipes undo your wide go-wide plan in one card
- Mono-green struggles with interaction, spot removal, and instant-speed answers
- The pump activation is expensive and telegraphed, vulnerable to a single removal spell or fog
Key Cards
- The One Ring — Repeatable draw that reliably triggers your second-draw Cat each turn while protecting you.
- Sylvan Library — Lets you draw extra cards every turn to fuel both Cats and a full hand for the pump.
- Beast Whisperer — Each creature you cast draws a card, chaining second-draw triggers into more Cats.
- Guardian Project — Nontoken creatures draw cards, feeding Jolrael's trigger while you flood the board.
- Craterhoof Behemoth — Redundant overrun finisher that closes games even when Jolrael's activation is answered.
- Heroic Intervention — Protects your board and commander from wipes and removal at a critical moment.
Upgrade Path
Add more cheap, repeatable draw engines (Mind's Eye, Esper Sentinel-style effects aren't green, but Toski, Bearer of Secrets and Bristly Bill help) to maximize second-draw triggers, and pack protection like Heroic Intervention and Tamiyo's Safekeeping. Lean into mana doublers (Doubling Cube, Nyxbloom Ancient) so you can ramp into both Jolrael's pump and a backup Craterhoof in the same turn. Tighten the curve with strong ramp (Sol Ring, Three Visits) and add Cathars' Crusade or Skullclamp to convert your Cat tokens into even more value and pressure.
