Marvo, Deep Operative
The Commander
Whenever Marvo attacks, clash with defending player. (Each clashing player reveals the top card of their library, then puts that card on their choice of the top or bottom. A player wins if their card had a greater mana value.)
Whenever you win a clash, draw a card. Then you may cast a spell from your hand with mana value 8 or less without paying its mana cost.
Guide
Gameplan
Connect with Marvo, win the clash, then chain free spells worth up to 8 mana every combat. You stack your top card high and the opponent's low using library manipulation, turning each attack into a free Plague Wind, Rise of the Dark Realms, or Cyclonic Rift while drawing extra cards. The deck snowballs into an overwhelming board state or simply mills/controls opponents to death.
Strengths
- Repeatable free casts of big spells generate huge tempo and card advantage
- Blue/black gives the best top-deck manipulation to reliably win clashes
- Flexible: can pivot into control, reanimator, or big-mana strategies
- Marvo is only 5 mana and can come down and immediately threaten value
Weaknesses
- Marvo must connect in combat, so removal and blockers shut off the engine
- Clash is variable without manipulation — you can whiff against a high-MV deck
- Free casts are capped at MV 8 and only one per clash win
- Two-color identity lacks ramp and broad answers compared to three-color decks
- Vulnerable to commander tax and being repeatedly killed
Key Cards
- Sensei's Divining Top — Lets you set up your top card every turn to guarantee a clash win and a free cast.
- Brainstorm — Cheap way to stack a high-MV card on top before attacking with Marvo.
- Rogue's Passage — Makes Marvo unblockable so the clash trigger reliably fires.
- Cyclonic Rift — A premium MV 7 spell that is devastating when cast for free off a clash win.
- Rise of the Dark Realms — At MV 9 it's too big to free-cast, but most reanimation and board wipes under 8 are ideal free hits.
- Vorinclex, Voice of Hunger — Example of an MV 8 bomb you can cheat into play to swing games immediately.
Upgrade Path
Add more cheap top-deck manipulation (Sensei's Divining Top, Scroll Rack, Mystic Sanctuary, ponder-style cantrips) so you essentially never lose a clash, and pack the deck with high-impact MV 6-8 spells to cheat out. Improve Marvo's evasion and protection with Rogue's Passage, Whispersilk Cloak, and Lightning Greaves, plus fast mana like Mana Crypt and signets to deploy him on turn three. Tighten the curve so most free-cast targets are game-warping, and add recursion like Eternal Witness or Snapcaster effects to rebuy your best clash hits.

Win Conditions
- ▸Free-casting a string of bombs and board wipes to dominate the board and attack out
- ▸Casting Cyclonic Rift / Plague Wind for free, then closing with Marvo and tokens
- ▸Reanimating or cheating in a haymaker like Sheoldred or Vorinclex each combat
- ▸Grinding card advantage into a control finish or a recurring mill/drain engine
Archetypes
- Control — Free counterspells and board wipes off clash wins let you answer threats while attacking.
- Reanimator — Win clashes to free-cast big creatures and reanimation spells of MV 8 or less.
- Big Mana / Cheat — The whole deck is built to cast expensive spells without paying for them.
- Spellslinger — Loading the deck with high-impact instants and sorceries maximizes free-cast value.
