Meriadoc Brandybuck
The Commander
Whenever one or more Halflings you control attack a player, create a Food token. (It's an artifact with ",
, Sacrifice this token: You gain 3 life.")
Guide
Gameplan
Flood the board with cheap Halflings, swing wide each turn, and bank Food tokens off your attacks. Use those Foods as artifact fodder for sacrifice/proliferate/lifegain payoffs while you grow your team with anthems and counters until your go-wide attack ends the game.
Strengths
- Cheap two-mana commander that comes down early and snowballs an aggressive board
- Generates value (Food) just by doing what aggro wants to do—attacking
- Mono-green gives strong ramp, big creatures, and reliable Halfling/tribal support from LOTR sets
- Doubles as an artifact-token engine for Food-matters and sacrifice subthemes
Weaknesses
- Mono-green has no real interaction—weak to board wipes, counterspells, and removal
- Halfling tribe is shallow and mostly small-bodied, so it folds to a single sweeper
- Foods only trigger on attacks, so the engine stalls if you can't profitably attack
- Lacks reach/evasion to close fast games against ramp/combo decks
Key Cards
- Frodo, Adventurous Hobbit — Cheap Halfling that turns your Food tokens into extra +1/+1 counters and acceleration when paired with Sam.
- Samwise the Stouthearted — Protects your board and recurs key creatures, a premier Halfling for the tribe.
- Trample of the Mumakil — Mass-sacrifice artifacts/Foods for a finisher and clears blockers for your wide team.
- Cultivator Colossus — Massive payoff that dumps your hand of lands while your Foods fuel the engine.
- Coppercoat Vanguard — Anthem and protection for your Halfling tribe, pushing your wide attacks through.
- Welcoming Vampire — Off-color reference; skip—instead lean on green card draw like Beast Whisperer to refill from small creatures.
Upgrade Path
Add green's best ramp (Three Visits, Nature's Lore, Sol Ring) to deploy Meriadoc and a wide board faster, then top with overrun effects (Craterhoof Behemoth, Pathbreaker Ibex) to convert your team into lethal. Improve resilience with Heroic Intervention and Tireless Provisioner-style Food/treasure engines, and cut the weakest vanilla Halflings for anthems and card draw (Beast Whisperer, Garruk's Uprising) to keep the swarm refueled.
