Rhys the Redeemed
The Commander
,
: Create a 1/1 green and white Elf Warrior creature token.
,
: For each creature token you control, create a token that's a copy of that creature.
Guide
Gameplan
Rhys the Redeemed is a one-drop token engine that snowballs the board: use the first ability to start generating Elf Warriors, then activate the second ability to double your entire token army for an explosive, often game-ending board. You win by going wide with anthems and overrun effects, draining life through aristocrats payoffs, or simply alpha-striking with a doubled army. Early turns are spent ramping and protecting Rhys so you can untap and pop the doubler.
Strengths
- Cheap commander that comes down turn one and is hard to answer profitably with most removal
- Token doubling effect scales exponentially and stacks with effects like Doubling Season for absurd boards
- GW gives access to the best anthems, overrun effects, and protection in the format
- Flexible across go-wide aggro, aristocrats, and counters strategies
Weaknesses
- Heavily reliant on the commander to generate value; repeated removal slows the deck to a crawl
- Board wipes are devastating and GW lacks strong recovery or card draw to rebuild
- No interaction in the command zone — vulnerable to combo and control decks
- Second ability is expensive and needs Rhys to survive a turn cycle before paying off
Key Cards
- Doubling Season — Doubles every token Rhys makes and turbo-charges his copy ability for explosive boards.
- Parallel Lives — Cheaper token doubler that compounds with Rhys's generation and copy abilities.
- Craterhoof Behemoth — Converts a wide token board into a lethal alpha strike in a single turn.
- Intangible Virtue — Cheap anthem that turns your fragile 1/1 tokens into a credible attacking force.
- Skullclamp — Solves GW's card-draw problem by turning surplus 1/1 tokens into a steady stream of cards.
- Cryptolith Rite — Turns your token army into a mana engine to repeatedly fire off Rhys's expensive doubler.
Upgrade Path
Add token doublers (Doubling Season, Parallel Lives, Anointed Procession) and free token generators to maximize Rhys's exponential payoff, and lean on Skullclamp plus Smothering Tithe to fix GW's card and mana shortcomings. Include a fast mana suite (Sol Ring, mana dorks, Cryptolith Rite) so you can activate the doubler ahead of schedule, and add ways to protect or recur Rhys like Heroic Intervention and Eternal Witness. To reach higher power, build toward a compact combo finish such as Earthcraft or Ashnod's Altar loops backed by a token doubler for infinite mana and tokens.

Win Conditions
- ▸Overrun effects like Craterhoof Behemoth or Overwhelming Stampede for a one-shot alpha strike
- ▸Anthem stacking (Intangible Virtue, Beastmaster Ascension) to swing wide for the win
- ▸Aristocrats drain via Blood Artist, Zulaport Cutthroat, and sacrifice outlets
- ▸Combo loops with Cryptolith Rite or Earthcraft plus a token doubler for infinite tokens/mana
Archetypes
- Tokens — Rhys's whole identity is generating and then doubling armies of creature tokens.
- Go-Wide Aggro — Anthems and overrun effects convert a doubled token board into lethal damage.
- Aristocrats — Endless tokens fuel sacrifice outlets and drain payoffs like Blood Artist.
- +1/+1 Counters — GW counters synergy pairs with Elf Warriors and effects like Cathars' Crusade and Hardened Scales.
