Uurg, Spawn of Turg
The Commander
Uurg's power is equal to the number of land cards in your graveyard.
At the beginning of your upkeep, surveil 1. (Look at the top card of your library. You may put that card into your graveyard.)
, Sacrifice a land: You gain 2 life.
Guide
Gameplan
Uurg is a self-mill/lands-matter beater that grows with every land in your graveyard and supplies a steady upkeep surveil to fuel the yard. You bin lands quickly, swing with a large Uurg, and lean on land recursion to refill and outvalue opponents while gaining incidental life. The deck wants to turn graveyard lands into both a clock and a resource engine.
Strengths
- Cheap commander that can become enormous quickly via self-mill and fetch-lands
- Built-in card advantage every turn through upkeep surveil
- Land sacrifice ability gives a sustainable life buffer and synergizes with lands-matter payoffs
- Black-green has elite recursion and ramp to refuel after milling/sacrificing
Weaknesses
- Uurg is easily chump-blocked or removed, and resets to 0 power if it isn't connecting
- No evasion or trample built in, so it needs help to deal damage
- Graveyard hate (Rest in Peace, Bojuka Bog) shrinks Uurg and shuts the deck off
- Sacrificing your own lands can leave you mana-light without careful sequencing
Key Cards
- Crucible of Worlds — Lets you replay lands from your graveyard, turning the sac ability and self-mill into a renewable engine.
- Ramunap Excavator — A creature-based Crucible that recurs fetchlands and sacrificed lands for relentless value.
- Splendid Reclamation — Returns every land from your graveyard to the battlefield for an explosive ramp turn while keeping Uurg fed.
- World Shaper — On death it returns all lands from your graveyard, rewarding aggressive self-mill and sacrifice.
- The Gitrog Monster — Mills extra lands, draws cards off land sacrifice, and is a perfect lands-matter partner for Uurg's yard.
- Rampant Growth — Stand-in for fetch/ramp effects that put lands into the yard while accelerating you.
Upgrade Path
Add more fetchlands (Verdant Catacombs, Bloodstained Mire) and self-mill (Grisly Salvage, Mulch) to fill the yard fast, then double down on recursion with Crucible of Worlds, Ramunap Excavator, and Splendid Reclamation. For consistency include trample/evasion enablers so Uurg actually connects, and consider Gitrog combo lines or strong landfall payoffs like Avenger of Zendikar and Scapeshift to convert ramp into wins.

Win Conditions
- ▸Suit up a giant Uurg with trample/evasion (Rancor, Whispersilk Cloak) for commander-damage kills
- ▸Splendid Reclamation or World Shaper ramp into a backbreaking finisher or X-spell
- ▸Grind value with land recursion and out-resource opponents into a large board
- ▸Use The Gitrog Monster or other card engines to bury the table in advantage
Archetypes
- Lands — Uurg rewards a graveyard full of lands and pairs with recursion to grind value out of every land drop.
- Self-Mill / Graveyard Value — Surveil and mill effects both grow Uurg and stock recursion targets.
- Voltron (budget angle) — With trample and evasion Uurg becomes a one-shot threat that scales with your graveyard.
- Aristocrats-lite — Sacrificing lands and creatures feeds payoffs while the life-gain ability buffers you.
